Conrad IV was succeeded as duke of Swabia by his only son, two-year old Conradin.

In 1261, attempts to elect young Conradin king were unsuccessful.

With Conradin, the direct line of the Dukes of Swabia finally ceased to exist, though most of the later emperors were descended from the Hohenstaufen indirectly.

Hugh was technically regent of Jerusalem as well, both for Conrad and for Conrad's son Conradin after Conrad died in 1254.

Clement IV is said to have disapproved of the cruelties committed by his protégé, but there seems no foundation for the statement by Gregorovius that Clement IV became an accomplice by refusing to intercede for the unfortunate Conradin whom Charles had him beheaded in the marketplace of Naples.

Charles promised to restore the annual census or feudal tribute due the Pope as overlord, some 10, 000 ounces of gold being agreed upon, while the Pope would work to block Conradin from election as King of the Germans.

Innocent therefore moved to Anagni to wait for Manfred's reaction to the event, especially as Conrad's heir, Conradin, had been entrusted to the Papal tutorage by the King's testament.

With the usurpation of the Sicilian throne from Conradin by Manfred of Sicily in 1258, the relationship between the Papacy and the Hohenstaufen had changed again.

Instead of the boy Conradin, safely sequestered across the Alps, the Papacy now faced an able military leader in Italy.

Manfred's own usurpation from Conradin told upon King Louis ' scruples ; this time, he was persuaded to admit the offer, and Charles ratified a treaty with the Pope in July 1263.

But the Pope was willing to allow this ; for in September 1267 Conradin marched south to reclaim the rights of the Hohenstaufen, and one of his agents instigated a revolt in Sicily.

In a trial carefully managed by Charles, Conradin was condemned for treason, and he was beheaded on 29 October 1268 at the age of 16.
