Fully confused at this point, Corwin reveals that he has no memory of what they have been doing or of who he is so Deirdre convinces him to walk the Pattern, which she believes will restore his memory.

While Corwin acts with a strong personal code of honor, he is also extremely practical ; he will not engage in a fight of principle unless he believes he has a chance to win, and he is perfectly willing to employ subterfuge to defeat an opponent.

In a conversation with his mother Dara-mistress of Corwin once, and a descendant of Benedict, also from the royal house of Chaos-he finds that she was the one who sent the t ' yiga demon which is now Coral's sister Nayda ( and appears to be developing something of an affection for Luke.

It becomes apparent that the real Corwin is held prisoner by Dara herself-ironically, in a chapel devoted to Corwin ( chapels devoted to Amberites having apparently become a popular cult in Chaos after the Patternfall War: Jurt worshipped Brand, House Hendrake idolised Benedict, and Mandor's patron was Fiona.

It is while visiting Tir-na Nog ' th that Corwin fights the ghost of his brother Benedict, gaining possession of a magical artificial right arm which the real Benedict adopts, having lost his real arm in a fight.

He is unable to contact Benedict but when he attempts to reach Brand, he views him in a prison and Brand desperately asks Corwin to free him before his image disappears.

Corwin and Ganelon journey on and meet the Protector, who turns out to be Corwin's long-lost brother Benedict, the most formidable swordsman and military strategist in existence.

Benedict greets Corwin cordially, but refuses to support his claim to the throne.

Benedict also reveals that their father, King Oberon, did not abdicate, as Corwin had believed, but simply vanished.

Benedict sends Corwin and Ganelon on to his country house.

This dream-version of Dara tells him her origins and the ghostly Benedict is able to reach Corwin with the arm.

Ganelon proposes that Corwin use the Trumps to contact Benedict, who transports them to the slopes of mount Kolvir.

Ganelon, who is with Benedict, contacts Corwin via Trump.

Corwin gives Benedict the trump of the Courts.

This is likely due to three scenes in the Chronicles: first, when Eric paralyzes Corwin with an attack across the Trump and refuses to desist because one or the other would be dominated ; second, when Corwin faces the demon Strygalldwir, it is able to wrestle mentally with him when their gazes meet ; and third, when Fiona is able to keep Brand immobile in the final battle at the Courts of Chaos.

Corwin descends back to the dungeons and meets with Dworkin who explains how the Pattern might be repaired.

Roger Zelazny wrote an explicit sex scene ( by nineteen-seventies standards ) between Corwin and Dara and was amused when the book's editor asked him to remove it so that sales to libraries wouldn't be jeopardized.

Fearing that he has been framed for Caine's murder, Corwin summons Random, who tells him the story how he came to be chased across shadow to end up in New York:

Gérard fights Corwin, and later threatens him physically while all of the siblings are watching through trumps and is told that if he turns out to be responsible for Caine's death, Gérard will kill him, and that if Gérard is killed, the siblings will know Corwin did it.

While Corwin and Random discuss whether it would be safe to walk a damaged pattern, Ganelon runs through the stain to the center and retrieves the objects-a dagger, and a pierced Trump card.

Corwin is exhausted, and stays with Random while the others go to the Courts, where they think they should be safe.

Overjoyed at the sudden but unexplainable ability to fulfill his lifelong desire, Corwin proceeds to hand out gift-wrapped presents to passersby and then, entering Sister Florence's " Delancey Street Mission House ", to derelict men attending a Christmas Eve service.
