Eric then contacts Corwin by Trump, who reveals that he knew about his plans from Caine and the two engage in a mental duel which Corwin is unable to break from.

While a few of his siblings exceed him in certain skills, at arms ( Benedict ), strength ( Gérard ), and magic ( Brand, Fiona, Bleys ), Corwin is well-balanced in most and is the best leader of them all.

Corwin takes Jopin's craft Butterfly and sails away, while sending a message to Eric via a black bird, stating that he will return to claim the throne.

This is likely due to three scenes in the Chronicles: first, when Eric paralyzes Corwin with an attack across the Trump and refuses to desist because one or the other would be dominated ; second, when Corwin faces the demon Strygalldwir, it is able to wrestle mentally with him when their gazes meet ; and third, when Fiona is able to keep Brand immobile in the final battle at the Courts of Chaos.

Julian tells Corwin how Brand has acquired strange powers, including becoming a " living Trump ", capable of teleporting himself or other objects through shadow.

Reasoning that Brand will attempt to attune himself there, Ganelon asks Benedict to walk the Pattern in Amber, ready to teleport himself there when it appears and tells Corwin to keep permanent contact with Benedict through the Trump to teleport him out in case the city becomes immaterial.

During Corwin's imprisonment in the Amber dungeons, Dworkin helped Corwin escape using a Trump of Cabra Lighthouse he drew on the dungeon wall.

Corwin learns from Martin's trumps that the crossbowman who spared him is Merlin, his and Dara's son.

This suggests that the name is chosen because of Ganelon purposefully losing a battle to spite Corwin.

She also explains that Brand tried to kill Corwin on Earth because he saw a vision in Tir-na Nog ' th that Corwin would defeat him.

In his first report, he was critical of his predecessor, Thomas Corwin, because he made private arrangements for debt repurchases.

Thus both the Pattern and Logrus are forestalled for a time, in their attempts to escalate their conflict: while Corwin begins the journey back to Amber, Merlin-who wants peace with Amber-returns to Chaos to await his coronation.

At this point, Flaherty tells Corwin to " clean up this mess and get out of here ", as Dundee, angry at having his time wasted, throws accusations of incompetence at Flaherty, who responds that " like Corwin says, we're dealing with the supernatural here ".

With sarcastic disbelief, Dundee challenges Corwin to produce a bottle of cherry brandy, vintage 1903 and, as he continues to berate Flaherty ("... how dare you drag me here at the busiest time of the year ..."), Corwin comments " Oh, that's a good year " and reaches into the bag to hand Dundee his exact request.
