A more positive review came from Larry Stephens of Country Standard Time, who thought that the album had " the right mix " of songs.

Country Standard Time writer Kevin Oliver criticized the album for having " wildly uneven " material, calling the McEntire collaboration a " snoozer " and " South of Santa Fe " " wretched ".

This album was generally well-received, with the reviews in Allmusic and Country Standard Time noting that the album was more consistent than the previous ones.

" Dan McIntosh gave a mostly-negative review for Country Standard Time, where he wrote that " even his passionate singing cannot rise above this album's predictable lyrics and lame arrangements.

" Country Standard Time reviewer Jeffrey B. Remz wrote that Walker showed " a very pleasant country voice with a good sense of emotion " and that the production was more country-sounding than most mainstream acts, but said that it had several " generic " songs.

Country Standard Time was less favorable, with Scott Homewood saying that it " album just smacks of being assembled with the intent on capturing the burgeoning alternative country market ".
