In the 17th century the iambic hexameter, also called alexandrine, was used as a substitution in the heroic couplet, and as one of the types of permissible lines in lyrical stanzas and the Pindaric odes of Cowley and Dryden.

The Pindarick of Cowley was revived around 1800 by William Wordsworth for one of his very finest poems, the Intimations of Immortality ode ; irregular odes were also written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, and Percy Bysshe Shelley who wrote odes with regular stanza patterns.

However, Sir Thomas Bourchier was subsequently granted the manor of Swakeleys and Covelhall ( Cowley ).

First visited by the explorer DeSoto in 1537, Cowley County was officially organized as a county, but reserved for the Osage Indians, by the Kansas Legislature in March 1867, originally named Hunter County for Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter ( 1809 – 1887 ), a Virginia Representative and Senator to Congress and Speaker of the House in the twenty-sixth Congress.

In 1870, the county was renamed for Matthew Cowley, First Lieutenant in Company I, 9th Kansas Cavalry, who died at Little Rock, Arkansas, on October 7, 1864.

In 2010, the Keystone-Cushing Pipeline ( Phase II ) was constructed north to south through Cowley County, with much controversy over tax exemption and environmental concerns ( if a leak ever occurs ).

The Lyke Wake Walk was started by a local farmer, Bill Cowley, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England, in 1955.

Richard Meux Benson, founder of the first Anglican religious order for men, Society of St John the Evangelist, the " Cowley Fathers ", was also baptised in the church.

Cowley resigned from the Quorum, at the request of church president Joseph F. Smith, on October 28, 1905 because his presence in the hierarchy undermined the church's position in the Reed Smoot hearings.

On October 11, 1945, his son Matthew Cowley was called to serve as an Apostle for the church.

He and also Mr. Cowley and Mr. Warren have fallen to the temptation which besets many of us to read into our authors -- Nathaniel Hawthorne, for example, and Herman Melville -- protests against modernism, material progress, and science which are genuine protests of our own but may not have been theirs.

The ending of the name of this village near Oxford, means " cleared ground ": the Old English term for that was " ley " — just up the road from modern Iffley, the town of Cowley also preserves the Old English ending and meaning in its name.

Continuing expansion meant another move in 1927 to a separate factory in Edmund Road, Cowley, Oxford, near the main Morris factory and for the first time it was possible to include a production line.

He edited the Works of William Warburton, the Select Works ( 1772 ) of Abraham Cowley, and left materials for an edition ( 6 vols., 1811 ) of Addison.

Post-Morris cars to have been built at Cowley include the Austin / MG Maestro, Austin / MG Montego, Rover 600, Rover 800 and ( for a short time ) the Rover 75.

Rebuilding the Cowley plant to include " new automated body building facilities " saved £ 2. 00 in transport costs per car for bodies that no longer needed to be transported from the corporation's Swindon plant and in the longer term further transport costs were saved by concentrating assembly of the model at a single plant, rather than splitting it between plants at Cowley and Longbridge.

Bob Cowley Riley ( September 18, 1924 – February 16, 1994 ) was an American educator and politician who served as Acting Governor of Arkansas for 11 days in 1975.

This was his last service in the Peninsular War, because his liaison with Lady Charlotte, the wife of Henry Wellesley, afterwards Lord Cowley, made it impossible subsequently for him to serve with Wellington, Wellesley's brother.

Miffed, Cowley sent Albina to Drury Lane ’ s rival theatre in London, Covent Garden, but it met with no better reception there, and the script alternated between the theatres for the next two years.

The production of Albina generated public controversy for Cowley.

On 10 August, More wrote to the St. James Chronicle to protest that she “ never saw, heard, or read, a single line of Mrs. Cowley ’ s Tragedy .” In her preface to Albina, Cowley allows that the theatre managers, who in those days also acted as script editors, may have inadvertently given More her ideas: “ Amidst the croud of Plots, and Stage Contrivances, in which a Manager is involv ’ d, recollection is too frequently mistaken for the suggestions of imagination ” in original.

Although she continued to enjoy a brilliant literary career, More did not write for the stage after her paper war with Cowley.
