Extending entirely across the state of Alabama for about south of its northern boundary, and in the middle stretching farther south, is the Cumberland Plateau, or Tennessee Valley region, broken into broad tablelands by the dissection of rivers.

Adjoining the Cumberland Plateau region on the southeast is the Appalachian Valley ( locally known as Coosa Valley ) region, which is the southern extremity of the Appalachian Mountains, and occupies an area within the state of about.

The Cumberland Plateau region is drained to the west-northwest by the Tennessee River and its tributaries ; all other parts of the state are drained to the southwest.

Most of the lower half of the Wolf River comprises an embayment of Dale Hollow, which also extends into Cumberland County, Kentucky.

Famous in American history for its role as one key passageway through the lower central Appalachians, it was an important part of the Wilderness Road and is now part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.

Although some 1, 000 to 1, 500 feet ( 300 to 450 m ) lower in elevation than the Mount Rogers highcountry to the east ( Mount Rogers is the highest peak in Virginia ), the terrain surrounding the High Knob of Stone Mountain forms a true highcountry with respect to the western slopes of the Appalachians in Virginia ( i. e., the Cumberland Mountains ).
