In 1810, a number of Presbyterian congregations and ministers, ejected by Kentucky Synod for their pro-revival position and their relaxation of ordination requirements in a frontier setting, formed the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination, although they never intended the split to be permanent.

There is limited evidence of the canal remaining except for some masonry such as bridges and retaining walls remaining near to the Duke Of Cumberland.

According to a modern history of the regiment, the idea for creating this unique force was proposed by Jacques Prevost, a Swiss soldier and adventurer who was a friend of The Duke of Cumberland ( William, who was the King's second son and was Commander-in-Chief of the Forces.

The visitor center features a museum with interactive exhibits about the Gap's role as a transportation corridor, an auditorium that shows films about the area's cultural and natural history, a book store and the Cumberland Crafts gift shop.

Famous in American history for its role as one key passageway through the lower central Appalachians, it was an important part of the Wilderness Road and is now part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.

Another catalyst that helped lead to the creation of the ARC was the 1962 book Night Comes to the Cumberlands: A Biography of a Depressed Area by Harry M. Caudill on the poverty and history of the Cumberland area of Appalachia, predominantly in Kentucky.

On the other hand, the German aristocrat Ernst August, Prince of Hanover ( born 1954 ), a male-line descendant of George III of the United Kingdom, possesses no legal British name, titles or styles ( although he is entitled to re-claim the once-royal dukedom of Cumberland ), was born in the line of succession to the British crown and is bound by Britain's Royal Marriages Act 1772.

He was severely wounded in a battle around the Cumberland Gap area and also captured, although he later escaped.

The king refused, having promised the reversion of the post to the Duke of Cumberland, but obtained Granby's retention as Master-General of the Ordnance in the new Rockingham ministry, although Granby did not co-operate with the ministry and voted against the repeal of the Stamp Act.

The Cumberland pig breed has now been revived, although not officially recognised by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
