Cutler and church
Clitherall was founded in 1864 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ ( Cutlerite ), a small Latter Day Saint faction started in 1853 by Alpheus Cutler, a former associate of Joseph Smith, Jr., founder of the original Latter Day Saint church in 1830.
This church derives its epithet from its founder, Alpheus Cutler, a member of the Nauvoo High Council and of Joseph Smith's secretive Council of Fifty.
LDS church records indicate that Cutler was sealed to six other women during this timeframe, but members of his church adamantly deny this or any assertion that Cutler or Joseph Smith, for that matter approved of or practiced plural marriage.
