* A very High resolution monochrome video card with blitter and hardware text line and arc drawing capability, was designed for CAD applications, based on the NEC µPD7220 chip designed for graphic terminals, but was also used by some personal computers like the DEC Rainbow, and notably also for the Tulip System I.

Notably, the design team was led by Dirk Meyer, who had worked as a lead engineer on multiple Alpha microprocessors during his employment at DEC. Jerry Sanders had approached many of the engineering staff to work for AMD as DEC wound down their semiconductor business, and brought in a near-complete team of engineering experts.

As a result of its free availability, knowledge of BASIC became relatively widespread ( for a computer language ) and BASIC was implemented by a number of manufacturers, becoming fairly popular on newer minicomputers like the DEC PDP series and the Data General Nova.

Megabyte was used to describe the 22-bit addressing of DEC PDP-11 / 70 ( 1975 )

DEC would later introduce the extremely popular PDP-11 line that originally was built with SSI ICs but was eventually implemented with LSI components once these became practical.

Some DEC PDP-10 machines stored their microcode in SRAM chips ( about 80 bits wide x 2 Kwords ), which was typically loaded on power-on through some other front-end CPU.

At its peak, DEC was the second largest employer in Massachusetts, second only to the state government.

DEC's last major attempt to find a space in the rapidly changing market was the DEC Alpha 64-bit RISC processor architecture.

DEC was a major player overseas where Compaq had less presence.

DEC was headquartered at a former wool mill at Clock Tower Place, Maynard MA from 1957 until 1992

The newly christened DEC received $ 70, 000 from AR & D for a 70 % share of the company, and began operations in a Civil War era textile mill in Maynard, Massachusetts, where plenty of inexpensive manufacturing space was available.

While the PDP-5 introduced a lower-cost line, 1963's PDP-6 was intended to take DEC into the mainframe market with a 36-bit machine.

In 1968, DEC was developing a PDP machine that would be based on 8-bit bytes instead of 6-bit characters.

In particular, the new design did not include many of the addressing modes that were intended to make programs smaller in memory, a technique that was widely used on other DEC machines and CISC designs in general.

The combination of architectural innovations proved superior to competitors and the " 11 " architecture was soon the industry leader, propelling DEC back to a strong market position.

Edson de Castro was the Product Manager at Digital Equipment Corporation ( DEC ) of their pioneering PDP-8, a 12-bit computer generally considered by most to be the first true minicomputer.

Ken Olsen was not supportive of this project, so de Castro left DEC along with another hardware engineer, Richard Sogge, and a software engineer, Henry Burkhardt III, to found Data General ( DG ) in 1968.

The Nova ’ s biggest competition was from the new DEC PDP-11 computer series, and to a lesser extent the older DEC PDP-8 systems.

The Eclipse family of systems was later introduced with an extended upwardly compatible instruction set, and the MV-series further extended the Eclipse into a 32-bit architecture to compete with the DEC VAX.

One of these employees, Paul Vixie, continued to work on BIND after leaving DEC. BIND Version 4. 9. 2 was sponsored by Vixie Enterprises.

And, on December 30, 1995, InterSystems acquired the DSM product line from DEC. InterSystems consolidated these products into a single product line, branding them, on several hardware platforms, as OpenM.

The original DEC StrongARM team eventually split into two MIPS-based start-ups: SiByte which produced the SB-1250, one of the first high-performance MIPS-based systems-on-a-chip ( SOC ); while Alchemy Semiconductor ( later acquired by AMD ) produced the Au-1000 SoC for low-power applications.

Design of the device started by DEC, but was only partially complete when acquired by Intel, who had to finish the design.

In the second quarter of 1985, X acquired color support to function in the DEC VAXstation-II / GPX, forming what became version 9.

Servers use those processors and other readily available non-x86 processor choices, including the Sun Microsystems UltraSPARC, Fujitsu SPARC64 III and later, SGI MIPS, Intel Itanium, Hewlett Packard PA-RISC, Hewlett-Packard ( merged with Compaq which acquired first Digital Equipment Corporation ) DEC Alpha, IBM POWER and Apple Computer PowerPC ( specifically G4 and G5 series, as well as earlier PowerPC 604 and 604e series ) processors.

In 1998, Compaq also acquired the much larger Digital Equipment Corporation and inherited its DEC Alpha RISC servers with OpenVMS and Tru64 Unix customer bases.

The microprocessor was never released, since the Alpha line of microprocessors was discontinued shortly before HP acquired Compaq which had in turn acquired DEC. Dean Tullsen's work was also used to develop the Hyper-threading ( Hyper-threading technology or HTT ) versions of the Intel Pentium 4 microprocessors, such as the " Northwood " and " Prescott ".

DEC has not acquired any public fishing rights along the four miles () south of, but public access is relatively unhindered as there are several bridges, paralleling railroad tracks ( both of which automatically create public access to adjacent areas of the stream under New York law ) and the area is otherwise lightly posted against trepassing.

DEC has also acquired public fishing easements on a small stretch in Mumford and much of both banks along Oatka Trail in the Town of Le Roy between Mud Creek and the unnamed northern tributary two miles ( 3. 2 km ) upstream.

DEC later sold to Compaq, which was acquired by HP.

Under his leadership TCS set up Technology Excellence Centers in India that have acquired knowledge, expertise and equipment in specialized technology areas like IBM, Oracle Corporation, SAP, AS400, DEC, HP, Microsoft, Silicon Graphics, Sun and Tandem.

Formerly a private estate and fish hatchery, the DeBruce Camp was acquired by the DEC in the 1940s and converted into a conservation education camp for boys.

The new SQLC " gang of four ", MS, Lotus, DEC and Sybase, brought an updated version of SQLC to the next SAG meeting in June 1990.

The first native VAX UNIX product from DEC was Ultrix-32, based on 4. 2BSD with some non-kernel features from System V, and was released in June 1984.

DEC ’ s first major sale was on June 13, 1991 to a chemical company based on the East Coast of the USA.

DEC surveys have found that by June few of the stocked trout remain, showing that the stretch has heavy fishing pressure.

Following an announcement of the project's launch, no further statements had been issued by the DEC regarding its work as of June 2009.

The Alpha architecture was sold, along with most parts of DEC, to Compaq in 1998.

After Compaq's purchase of DEC in early 1998, with the release of version 4. 0F, Digital UNIX was renamed to Tru64 UNIX to emphasise its 64-bit-clean nature and de-emphasise the Digital brand.

Contributing to this may have been the demise of DEC, a key Modula-3 supporter ( specially when it ceased to maintain it effectively any more before DEC was sold to Compaq in 1998 ).

SRC survived the takeover of DEC by Compaq in 1998.

Throughout the 1990s out-of-order execution became more common, and was featured in the IBM / Motorola PowerPC 601 ( 1993 ), Fujitsu / HAL SPARC64 ( 1995 ), Intel Pentium Pro ( 1995 ), MIPS R10000 ( 1996 ), HP PA-8000 ( 1996 ), AMD K5 ( 1996 ) and DEC Alpha 21264 ( 1998 ).

In 1998, DeskStation licensed its motherboard designs and chipsets from to Samsung, a DEC ( Digital Equipment Corporation ) Alpha licensee.
