Home Networked Device Interoperability Guidelines v1. 5 was published in March 2006 and expanded in October of the same year ; the changes included the addition of two new product categories — printers and mobile devices — as well as an " increase of DLNA Device Classes from two to twelve " and an increase in supported user scenarios related to the new product categories.

The ADB Virtual Gateway uses software that resides within the middleware and is based on open standards, including DLNA home networking and the DTCP-IP standard, to ensure that all content, including paid-for encrypted content like Pay TV services, can only be accessed by secure CE devices.

While previous versions streamed media to UPnP compliant devices ( Digital Media Server role ) and could play media by fetching it from a network share ( Digital Media Player role ), Windows Media Player 12 can access media from the shared media libraries on the network or HomeGroup, stream media to DLNA 1. 5 compliant devices and allows itself ( once the remote control option is turned on ) to be remotely controlled by Digital Media Controller devices which stream media ( Digital Media Renderer role ).

The ( DLNA ) is a non-profit collaborative trade organization established by Sony in June 2003, that is responsible for defining interoperability guidelines to enable sharing of digital media such as music, photos and videos between consumer devices such as computers, TVs, printers, cameras, cell phones, and other multimedia devices.

As of January 2011, over 9, 000 different devices have obtained " DLNA Certified " status, indicated by a logo on their packaging and confirming their interoperability with other devices.

* Digital Media Printer ( DMPr ): These devices provide printing services to the DLNA home network.

This helps in bringing content such as videos, photos and music stored on DLNA Certified devices to a larger selection of consumer electronics, mobile and PC products.

* Jamcast, a DLNA compliant media server for Windows that is capable of streaming any audio playing on the PC to DLNA devices.

DLNA-certified, Stora products will serve media to DLNA devices, such as Netgear's own EVA-2000 Digital Entertainer Live, or other DLNA-compliant products such as the Western Digital WD TV Live.

This version introduced better synchronization with Android devices, library sharing over DLNA / UPnP, improved audio output via WASAPI, the ability to run from a USB stick, and secure CD ripping.

" The vendors of software are allowed to claim that their software is a DLNA Technology Component if the software has gone through certification testing on a device and the device has been granted DLNA Certification.

DLNA Technology Components are not marketed to the consumer but only to industry.

Any DLNA server will work with the Moxi HD DVR, but TwonkyMedia Manager, Tversity Media Server, Windows Media Connect, and PlayOn are fully tested.

With DLNA Certified software, consumers can upgrade products from within their home networks that may not be DLNA Certified and bring them into their personal DLNA ecosystems.

* Commercial Video Profile, a set of guidelines published by DLNA for the streaming of or playback of high-value, premium commercial content across home networks.

DLNA uses Universal Plug and Play ( UPnP ) for media management, discovery and control.

UPnP defines the type of device that DLNA supports (" server ", " renderer ", " controller ") and the mechanisms for accessing media over a network.

The DLNA guidelines then apply a layer of restrictions over the types of media file format, encodings and resolutions that a device must support.

Sony established the DLNA in June 2003 as the Digital Home Working Group, changing to its current name 12 months later, when the first set of guidelines for DLNA was published.

DLNA is run by a board of directors consisting of 9 members.

Consumers can see if their product is certified by looking for a DLNA logo on the device or by verifying certification through the DLNA Product Search.

In early 2011, DLNA began a Software Certification program in order to make it easier for consumers to share their digital media across a broader range of products.

DLNA is certifying software that is sold directly to consumers through retailers, websites and mobile application stores.

The UPnP AV standards have been referenced in specifications published by other organizations including Digital Living Network Alliance Networked Device Interoperability Guidelines, International Electrotechnical Commission IEC 62481-1, and Cable Television Laboratories OpenCable Home Networking Protocol.

This AICC specification ( CMI001-AICC / CMI Guidelines For Interoperability ) was originally designed for CD-ROM / LAN ( local file-based ) operation and was updated in January 1998 to add a web-based interface called HACP ( HTTP-based AICC / CMI Protocol ).

UK Notified Bodies ( UK NoBos ) are UK bodies authorised to assess the compatibility of works or equipment with Technical Specifications for Interoperability ( TSI ) as part of the system to effectively and safely allow the interoperability of railway services within the European Union.

Many other education-related specifications allow for LO metadata to be embedded within XML instances, such as: describing the resources in an IMS Content Package or Resource List ; describing the vocabularies and terms in an IMS VDEX ( Vocabulary Definition and Exchange ) file ; and describing the question items in an IMS QTI ( Question and Test Interoperability ) file.

* Physical Security Interoperability Alliance, industrial standardization initiative promoting interoperability of IP-enabled security devices

* Media Interoperability Unit ( MIU ): These devices provide content transformation between required media formats for home network and mobile handheld devices.

Interoperability is a property of a product or system, whose interfaces are completely understood, to work with other products or systems, present or future, without any restricted access or implementation.

The Open Group's best-known services are their certification programs, including certification for products and best practices: POSIX, Schools Interoperability Framework ( SIF ), North American State Lotteries Association ( NASPL ), and UNIX.

The self-certification using the ComplianceTestTool ( CTT ) and the participation at an Interoperability Workshop ( IOP ) are now enhanced with a Certification in an independent test facility.

The APIs are defined using Web Service technology: interfaces are defined using WSDL 1. 1 and conform with Web Services Interoperability ( WS-I Basic Profile ).

EIRENE defines the “ Technical Specification for Interoperability ” ( TSI ) as the set of mandatory specifications to be fulfilled to keep compatibility with other European networks ; current TSI are FRS 7 and SRS 15.

Groupcall are full and active members of SIFA, and currently the only organisation able to provide an external Schools Interoperability Framework agent for SIMS. Net ( School Information Management System ), Facility CMIS ( Serco Group ) and Integris G2 ( RM plc ).

However, if a hybrid gateway is leveraged, such as one from Microsoft's Open Interoperability Site, then in fact everything is encrypted from all points if ( SSL certificates are configured on the gateway and TLS elected as the transmission type ).
