The Easy TV consortium informed the BAI on 12 May 2010 that it was declining their offer to pursue negotiations regarding the Commercial DTT Multiplex Licence.

The BAI ( then the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland ) engaged in two phases of targeted consultation to assist in the development of its DTT Multiplex Licensing Policy.

The broadcaster and service provider of TeleG was SDN, the company which holds the licence for DTT multiplex A. SDN, then owned by NTL, S4C and United Business Media, was awarded the Multiplex A licence in May 1998.

In December 2011 Sponka. tv has also begun transmitting via DTT on channel UHF 34 ( Multiplex L5 ) from the transmitter of Ankaran.

Top Up TV, as Newincco 166 Ltd, attempted to make an application for the multiplex licence bid for multiplex D on the DTT service in 2002 as a joint application with Carlton, Granada and Channel 4, trading as the Digital Terrestrial Alliance ( DTA ).

In 2008, Boxer announced that it had put in a bid to operate three of the four multiplexes of the DTT service for Ireland, in conjunction with Irish company Communicorp.

Many years after the closure of ONdigital, ITV ( the company formed by the merger of Carlton Television and Granada ) successfully bid for a slot on digital terrestrial ( DTT ) multiplex D. It was announced that Men & Motors would be launched on Freeview on 2 May 2005.

A subscription-based DTT service, Top Up TV, launched in March 2004 using unused channel space on multiplexes that were owned by parties who, at the time, were not members of the Freeview consortium.

Advanced Digital Broadcast ( ADB ) launched its first hybrid DTT / IPTV set-top box in 2005, which provided Telefónica with the digital TV platform for its Movistar Imagenio service by the end of that year.

This was an open standard that was then used by all broadcasters on DTT.

That response to consultation was issued on Tuesday 28 July 2009 Having provided options to stakeholders in terms of 2 options outlined in Consultation 08 / 44 of Mobile Telegraphy License or a technology neutral Wireless Telegarphy License, and minded by the 7 responses it received, the Mobile Telegraphy Licence was seen as the best use of spectrum, given the nature of the spectrum of 8 MHz of UHF band in between 470 to 750 MHz in the five main urban areas due to the limited spectrum arising from DTT introduction and use of 4 multiplexes as the spectrum priority prior to analogue switchover ( ASO ).

Approval for the revised National DTT plan and the new Saorsat satellite service was announced by the Minister for Communications at the end of July 2010.

Instead, the service is only available on DAB Digital Radio and on Digital television through operators on satellite services, such as Sky, cable operators, such as Virgin Media, DTT services, such as Freeview, and on IPTV.

Freeview officially launched on 30 October 2002 at 5 am when the BBC and Crown Castle ( now Arqiva ) officially took over the digital terrestrial television ( DTT ) licences to broadcast on the three multiplexes from the defunct ITV Digital ( originally called ONdigital ).

On 1 May 2009 Fintan Drury, chairman of the OneVision consortium ( made up of the TV3 Group, Arqiva, Eircom and Setanta Sports ), announced that OneVision is to enter negotiations with the BCI, with the view to take over operations of the Irish pay DTT service.

TV3 Group helped to shape a consortium known as One Vision ( DTT ) which was also made up of Arqiva, Eircom and Setanta Sports.

Approval for the DTT change was needed from the regulator Ofcom, which told Sky and multiplex licence holder Arqiva that the move " would not unacceptably diminish the capacity of the services broadcast to appeal to a variety of tastes and interests.

This way is known as Digital terrestrial television ( DTT ).

The Top Up TV service is not connected with the Freeview service ; it simply runs alongside it on the DTT platform.

Changes in the way that DTT is transmitted mean that a digital set-top box from the late 1990s would have offered impaired performance as early as 2002, and will today be completely unusable in many parts of the UK where transmission is fully digital.

Digital terrestrial television ( DTTV or DTT ) is the technological evolution of broadcast television and an advancement of analog television.

MIAC is estimating that 14 million, at maximum, traditional non-digital TV sets remain and need the " simplified DTT tuner " to be adapted even after complete transition to DTT after July 2011 ; it is aiming to avoid the disposal of large numbers of useless TV sets without such a tuner at one time.
