In his second season Dalglish recorded a personal best of 21 league goals for the club, and he was also named Football Writers ' Association Footballer of the Year.

It was also around this time that he began to form a potent strike partnership with Ian Rush ; Dalglish began to play just off Rush, " running riot in the extra space afforded to him in the hole ".

In total, Dalglish played 102 times for Scotland ( a national record ) and he scored 30 goals, ( also a national record, which matched that set by Denis Law.

During the Hillsborough Memorial Service on 15 April 2011, Liverpool MP Steve Rotherham announced he would submit an Early Day Motion to have Dalglish knighted, " not only for his outstanding playing and managerial career, but also the charity work he has done with his wife, Marina, for breast cancer support and what he did after Hillsborough.

The appointment was confirmed in July 2009, and Dalglish was also made the club's ambassador.

It was no surprise that Rush also added the Football Writers Footballer of the Year to the PFA award he had already claimed-the same feat that his strike partner Kenny Dalglish had achieved a year earlier.

He also claimed that he could receive the ball as few as six or seven times throughout a match whereas at Liverpool he may receive it more than twenty times, and he had more freedom under Kenny Dalglish who did not ask him to stay on the left wing all the time.

He was a prolific scorer in the reserves, but the phenomenal partnership of Dalglish and emerging goalscorer Ian Rush rendered him surplus to first team requirements – the two main strikers also rarely were injured – by the 1982 – 83 season, when he scored three times in eight league games but failed to play enough games to merit a title medal.

However, United ( now managed by Shearer's old boss at Blackburn, Kenny Dalglish ) had a good run in the FA Cup ; Shearer scored the winning goal in a semi final victory over Sheffield United as the team reached the final.

Kenny Dalglish scored the winning goal against England in 1976 by nutmegging Ray Clemence.

In 1990 – 91 he scored 16 league goals, though the title slipped from Liverpool's grasp to that of Arsenal following the sudden resignation of Kenny Dalglish and the appointment of Graeme Souness as manager.

Fairclough's scored his one and only Liverpool hat-trick on 9 February 1980 during the thrilling 5 – 3 league victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road, the goals came in the 4th, 18th and 75th minutes, Kenny Dalglish ( 88th ) and Jimmy Case ( 89th ) guaranteed a late win for the Reds.

Rush never scored but played well and the following year he was the regular partner to Kenny Dalglish with Johnson being used less frequently.

He played 30 league games and scored once, remaining a regular player even after the resignation of Kenny Dalglish as manager on 22 February 1991 – after which he was succeeded by Graeme Souness.

Dalglish became player-manager of Liverpool in 1985 after the resignation of Joe Fagan, winning a further three First Divisions, two FA Cups and four FA Charity Shields, before resigning from Liverpool in 1991.

Dalglish made a run across his path into space, but Whelan used it as a dummy and clipped an exquisite ball over three Everton defenders into the path of Rush who, from the angle of the six-yard area, thumped the ball past Mimms, knocking over a camera in the process.

Grobbelaar was retained by three of Liverpool's greatest managers ; Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish, over a period of 13 years.

Although Rush missed 14 games due to injury, when all three of Liverpool's strikers were fit, Dalglish played with a 4 – 3 – 3 formation that allowed Beardsley, Aldridge and Rush to play alongside each other.

Redknapp was the last player to be signed by manager Kenny Dalglish before his surprising resignation on 22 February 1991 and later became the youngest Liverpool player to appear in European competition, at 18 years 120 days when making his Liverpool debut against Auxerre in the UEFA Cup on 23 October 1991, by which time Liverpool were being managed by Graeme Souness.

On 10 January 2011, Clarke was appointed first team coach at Liverpool by Kenny Dalglish, after Dalglish had replaced the dismissed Roy Hodgson two days before.
