Daneel explains that he had a role in attempting the restoration of Earth's soil and also settling humans at " Alpha ," but achieved less than he had wanted.

Since he also appears in all of the books of the Second Foundation Trilogy, Daneel is the most commonly appearing Asimov character.

In this novel, Daneel is also capable of conducting cerebroanalysis on humans as he meets them.

This ability is somewhat similar to the telepathic abilities possessed by R. Giskard Reventlov, although Daneel lacks Giskard's ability to also influence human emotion and thought.

In addition to telling a more expanded version of Hari Seldon's confrontation with the Commission of Public Safety it also interweaves R. Daneel Olivaw's struggle against a sect of robots who oppose his plans for humanity.

Daneel also manipulated galactic history for millennia, both during the Empire and Foundation eras.

In a conversation between Hari Seldon and Daneel Olivaw, Seldon discusses the possibility that the Foundation will in fact incorporate Gaia into the Second Galactic Empire.

Asimov later integrated the Robot Series into his all-engulfing Foundation series, making R. Daneel Olivaw appear again twenty thousand years later in the age of the Galactic Empire, in sequels and prequels to the original Foundation trilogy ; and in the final book of the Robots series — Robots and Empire — we learn how the worlds that later formed the Empire were settled, and how Earth became radioactive ( which was first mentioned in Pebble in the Sky ).

Foundation and Earth, in its concluding scene, establishes that Daneel survives into the Interregnum period, after the First Galactic Empire collapses.

Beginning during the latter years of the reign of Emperor Cleon I, Seldon's work brings him into the world of galactic politics, and takes him to the height of Imperial power as Cleon's First Minister, after the mysterious disappearance of his previous First Minister, Eto Demerzel ( whom Seldon knows as R. Daneel Olivaw ).

Prelude to Foundation ( 1988 ) suggests that one of Fastolfe's robots, R. Daneel Olivaw, manipulated Seldon into practical application of this science.

However, when Asimov decided decades later to retroactively integrate the universe of his Foundation and Galactic Empire novels with that of his Robot stories, a number of changes and minor discrepancies surfaced — the character R. Daneel Olivaw was established as having existed for some 20, 000 years, with the original Robot novels featuring the character occurring not more than a couple of millennia after the early-21st century Susan Calvin short stories.

Zeroth-Law robots under the control of R. Daneel Olivaw are seen continually struggling with " First Law " robots who deny the existence of the Zeroth Law, promoting agendas different from Daneel's.

In the 1986 book Foundation and Earth by Isaac Asimov, the ancient robot R. Daneel Olivaw says that over the thousands of years of his existence, every part of him has been replaced several times, including his brain, which he has carefully redesigned six times, replacing it each time with a newly constructed brain having the positronic pathways containing his current memories and skills, along with free space for him to learn more and continue operating for longer.

At the same time, Daneel and Giskard are engaged in a struggle of wits with Fastolfe's bitter archrivals, the roboticists Kelden Amadiro and Vasilia Aliena, Fastolfe's estranged daughter.

The novel was adapted for television as an episode of the British anthology series Out of the Unknown, with Baley being portrayed by Paul Maxwell and R. Daneel Olivaw by David Collings.

While en route to Aurora, Baley once again is partnered with R. Daneel Olivaw, as well as R. Giskard Reventlov, another of Fastolfe's robots.

As the leading theoretical roboticist on Aurora, he was the one who programmed Daneel, along with some 56 other robots who help around his house.

Quite nonchalantly, Byerley takes a bite — proving nothing since ( like R. Daneel Olivaw ) he may have been designed with an emergency stomach.

Toward the end of Prelude to Foundation, Hari reveals his suspicion that Dors is a gynoid working with R. Daneel Olivaw on his mission to protect mankind.

Upon approaching the planet, they are drawn closer and then to inside the Moon's core where they meet a robot by the name of R. Daneel Olivaw.

The first four robot novels The Caves of Steel ( 1953 ), The Naked Sun ( 1956 ), The Robots of Dawn ( 1983 ), and Robots and Empire ( 1985 ) make up the Elijah Baley ( sometimes " Lije Baley ") series, and are mysteries starring the Terran Elijah Baley and his humaniform robot partner, R. Daneel Olivaw.

In The Naked Sun, a major plot point is that R. Daneel is able to masquerade, on the planet Solaria, as a human Auroran and goes unrecognized by both robots and Solarian humans as a humaniform robot.

In the sequel, The Robots of Dawn, however, Elijah Bailey and Daneel have a detailed discussion about the fact that NO Spacer, including non-Aurorans, would ever confuse even a humaniform robot like Daneel for a real human being due to the mechanical behavior and mannerisms of a robot.

The latter novel indicates that the robot R. Daneel Olivaw was constructed some three thousand years after the founding of New York City.

The only sentient being remaining in the Solar system is robot Daneel Olivaw, who resides in a small station on the moon, overseeing the progress of a humanity now spread throughout the galaxy.

R. Daneel Olivaw is a fictional robot created by Isaac Asimov.

Baley and Olivaw's last case together is one on Aurora, in The Robots of Dawn, where the victim of the murder is a humanoid robot, Jander, who is physically an exact likeness of R. Daneel Olivaw.

By the end of the book, when Daneel has formulated the Zeroth Law of Robotics (" A robot may not harm humanity, or through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm "), Giskard is the first robot to act according to this new law.

He is told that the mind of R. Jander Panell, a humaniform robot identical to R. Daneel Olivaw, has been destroyed via a mental block —" roboticide ", as Baley later terms it.

The Spacers assign him a robot partner, R. Daneel Olivaw, who becomes his lifelong friend.

In fact, the " eternal " robot, R. Daneel Olivaw, created Gaia as a parallel plan ( he influenced Seldon's Plan ) that was hidden from Hari Seldon and even from the Second Foundation.

After having received numerous requests to continue the story of detective Elijah Baley and his robot partner R. Daneel Olivaw, featured in his earlier novels The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun, Asimov wrote this short detective story.
