The city is named for Daniel Greysolon, Le Sieur du Luth, the first known European explorer of the area.

Daniel Greysolon, and Sieur du Lhut, the city's namesake, arrived in 1679 to settle rivalries between two Indian nations, the Dakota and the Ojibwa, and to advance sandalwood trading missions in the area, none of which were very successful.

Later in 1680, the Mdewakanton Dakota were contacted by French explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut and the Mendota ( mdo-TE ) band of the Mdewakanton south of the Minnesota River were contacted later by Joseph Nicollet in the 18th century.

Father Louis Hennepin wrote in 1683, from information probably provided by Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut: " There is another River which falls ... into the Meschasipi ... We named it The River of the Grave, or Mausoleum, because the Savages buried there one of their Men ... who was bitten by a Rattlesnake.

" In late 1683 or spring 1684, Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, established a trading post near the mouth of the Kaministiquia River.

During the French regime, two fur trading posts were established at the delta of the Kaministiquia, the first by Daniel Greysolon, sieur Dulhut ( 1684 / 85-1696 ) and a second one in 1717 by Zacharie Robutel de la Noue, both now usually referred to as ( Fort Kaministiquia )) because of the large number of variant spellings used during the French regime, such as Kamanistigouian, Camanistigoyan, Kaministigoyan, etc.

In 1683 Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut established a fur trading post on Lake Nipigon named Fort Tourette after his brother, Claude Greysolon, Sieur de la Tourette.

They were led by the new Governor, Daniel de Rémy de Courcelle, and Lieutenant General Alexander de Prouville, Sieur de Tracy.

The portage likely was used by Europeans as early as 1679, when Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut visited a Sioux village at Big Sandy Lake during his exploration of the Lake Superior region and the Upper Mississippi.
