In 1836, John Daniell invented a primary cell in which hydrogen was eliminated in the generation of the electricity.

When the electrical circuit, consisting of a Daniell cell, a galvanometer of high resistance, and the metallic conductor, consisting of the ebonite plate, and the sheet of copper, or of the tube containing the filings, was completed, only a very small current flowed ; but there was a sudden diminution of the resistance, which was proved by a large deviation of the galvanometer needle when one or more electric discharges were produced in the neighbourhood of the circuit.

There were two previous film versions of Arthur Richman's play on which this film was based, a 1925 silent version from independent Peninsula Studios, San Mateo, California with Warner Baxter in Grant's role, and a little-known early talkie made in 1929 with Henry Daniell and Ina Claire.

John Frederic Daniell ( 12 March 1790 – 13 March 1845 ) was an English chemist and physicist.

Daniell, however, was animated with a love of the romantic and beautiful in architecture and nature.

A later variant of the Daniell cell called the gravity cell or crowfoot cell was invented in the 1860s by a Frenchman named Callaud and became a popular choice for electrical telegraphy.

The first land grants were given to Robert Daniell in 1711, who in turn sold to several other speculators, with the first planters arriving in the 1730s to begin building settlements.

We feel, in looking at these aquatints, that perhaps Daniell, with the philosophy of a much-travelled man, realised that in the cool greys and greens with which he “ stained ” his prints was the charm of his own land, more enduring than the exotic mystery of the Orient or the strange architecture of Hindistan .”

Daniell worked right up to his death, on August 16, 1837 at Brecknock Terrace, Camden Town ( now 135 St Pancras Way ).
