" Athletics and participation in the Greek system are the most popular campus activities ; in all, Dartmouth offers more than 350 organizations, teams, and sports.

Dartmouth is home to 32 recognized Greek houses: 17 fraternities, 12 sororities, and three coeducational organizations, In 2007, roughly 70 % of eligible students belong to a Greek organization ; since 1987, students have not been permitted to join Greek organizations until their sophomore year.

It is often pointed out that the charter of Dartmouth College, granted to Eleazar Wheelock in 1769, proclaims that the institution was created " for the education and instruction of Youth of the Indian Tribes in this Land in reading, writing and all parts of Learning ... as well as in all liberal Arts and Sciences ; and also of English Youth and any others.

Other programs include dual-degree programs in engineering with the California Institute of Technology, the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst ; the Frances Perkins Program, for women over the age of 24 who wish to complete the requirements for a bachelor of arts degree ; and the Postbaccalaureate Studies Program, for students who have already earned an undergraduate degree and wish to complete additional course work in preparation for graduate work in medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, dentistry, or physical therapy science.

The Ninth includes Dartmouth, as well as parts of Freetown and Lakeville ; the Thirteenth includes parts of Freetown, Lakeville and Middleborough ; and the Eleventh and Twelfth are both entirely within New Bedford.

A substantial portion of the town is part of the White Mountain National Forest, including Cherry Mountain (" Mount Martha ", at above sea level ), which is traversed by the Cohos Trail ; and part of the Dartmouth Range, which contains Mount Deception, the summit of which at is the highest point in town.

During the Great Depression the Ski Club had financial setbacks ; combined with little snow, the club looked to sell the tower.

The Pines Ski Area is the only remaining kame in the city ; the other one is under the university's Chapel of the Resurrection, however, grading of land in that area makes that particular kame almost nonexistent.

Recreational facilities and programs provided by The Town of Forestburgh include an outdoor swimming pool located at the Town Hall ; the historic Forestburgh log cabin, one of the earliest structures built in Sullivan County ; a skiing program for children in cooperation with Holiday Mountain Ski area ; a children ’ s summer arts and crafts program ; and a senior citizen ’ s program, which includes monthly meetings at the Town Hall and field trips.

Another potential exit road leads north from the Mission Ridge Ski Area to an intersection with an unimproved road that extends west to U. S. Route 97 ( via the ghost town of Liberty ) or north into Cashmere ; again, this route is ( when shown at all ) marked as not suitable for passenger autos.
