Wagner's works for the stage were scored with unprecedented scope and complexity: indeed, his score to Das Rheingold calls for six harps.

Many of the total of 14 banquet and beer halls had a Wagnerian theme-indeed, the very name of the complex was taken from the Wagner opera Das Rheingold, the first of the four parts of the cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, although this name did hark back to the building's planned former role as a concert venue.

Richard Wagner's epic series of operas, Der Ring des Nibelungen, is sometimes referred to as a trilogy even though it consists of four works: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung.

The first work, Das Rheingold, is shorter than the other three, running a bit over 3 hours, while all the others are over five.

The first and shortest opera, Das Rheingold, typically lasts two and a half hours, while the final and longest, Götterdämmerung, takes up to five hours, excluding act breaks.

Wagner called Das Rheingold a Vorabend or " Preliminary Evening ", and Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung were subtitled First Day, Second Day and Third Day, respectively, of the trilogy proper.

Richard Wagner in the opera Das Rheingold ( 1869 ) lets a choir of anvils introduce the scene of the dwarfs who have to work in the mines, similar to the introduction of the dwarfs in the 1937 Disney movie Snow White.

Although Das Rheingold comes first in the sequence of Ring operas, it was the last to be conceived.

He started work on the prelude producing a three paragraph prose sketch that month, although he remained uncertain of the name, considering in turn Der Raub: Vorspiel ( The Theft: Prelude ), Der Raub des Rheingoldes ( The Theft of the Rhinegold ) and Das Rheingold ( Vorspiel ) ( The Rhinegold ( Prelude )).

The prose draft of Das Rheingold was completed between 21 March and 23 March 1852 and its verse draft between 15 September and 3 November.

There also exist three sets of isolated musical sketches for Das Rheingold which were composed between 15 September 1852 and November 1853.

Das Rheingold was first performed at Munich on 22 September 1869.

Wagner intermingled development of the text of these last two planned operas, i. e. Die Walküre, originally entitled Siegmund und Sieglinde: der Walküre Bestrafung ( Siegmund and Sieglinde: the Valkyrie's Punishment ) and what became Das Rheingold.

Much of the work of this stage of development of the opera overlapped with work on the final orchestral version of Das Rheingold.

As Wagner had included some indication of the orchestration in the draft, he decided to move straight on to developing a full orchestral score in January 1855 without bothering to write an intermediate instrumentation draft as he had done for Das Rheingold.

In the first opera, Das Rheingold ( 1869 ), Fafner and his brother Fasolt win a massive hoard of treasure from Wotan, the king of the gods, in exchange for building the castle Valhalla.

However, while the opening section of Das Rheingold might indicate the use of such an instrument, the part quickly rises to G5, which would be the nineteenth partial on this long instrument ; Wagner understood brass instruments very well and saw that this was impractical.

Wagner's own Ring cycle, and specifically its components Das Rheingold and Die Walküre represent perhaps the closest he, or anyone else, came to realising these ideals ; he was himself after this stage to relax his own strictures and write more ' operatically '.
