Two years later, Robert von Lieben and Lee De Forest independently developed the amplifier tube, called the triode.

This distinction started around 1906 with the invention by Lee De Forest of the triode, which made electrical amplification of weak radio signals and audio signals possible with a non-mechanical device.

In August 1912, Lee De Forest, the inventor of the audion, had also observed oscillations in his amplifiers, but he didn't understand its significance until he read Armstrong's patents in 1914, which he promptly challenged.

Armstrong and De Forest fought a protracted legal battle over the rights to the " regenerative " oscillator circuit which has been called " the most complicated patent litigation in the history of radio ".

De Forest ultimately won before the Supreme Court in 1934 on technical grounds, but most sources regard Armstrong's claim as the stronger one.

While De Forest's addition of a third element to the Audion ( the grid ) and the subsequent move to modulated ( voice ) radio is not disputed, De Forest did not put his device to work.

Armstrong later published a paper detailing how the Audion worked, something De Forest could not do.

De Forest did not understand the workings of his Audion.

In particular, the regenerative circuit, which Armstrong patented in 1914 as a " wireless receiving system ," was subsequently patented by Lee De Forest in 1916 ; De Forest then sold the rights to his patent to AT & T.

Between 1922 and 1934, Armstrong found himself embroiled in a patent war, between himself, RCA, and Westinghouse on one side, and De Forest and AT & T on the other.

Before the Supreme Court of the United States, De Forest was granted the regeneration patent in what is today widely regarded as a misunderstanding of the technical facts by the Supreme Court justices.

In 1906, Lee De Forest of the U. S. added a control " grid " to the valve to create a vacuum tube RF detector called the Audion, leading Fleming to accuse him of copying his ideas.

Musical short films were made by Lee De Forest in 1923-24.

The first simple, two-pole magnetron was developed in 1920 by Albert Hull at General Electric's Research Laboratories ( Schenectady, New York ), as an outgrowth of his work on the magnetic control of vacuum tubes in an attempt to work around the patents held by Lee De Forest on electrostatic control.

The first three-element device ( mercury-vapor filled with a control grid ) was patented on March 4 1906 by the Austrian Robert von Lieben independent from that, on October 25 1906 Lee De Forest patented his two-element Audion.
