Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship and its crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), first officer Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), and chief medical officer Dr. Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ), in the 23rd century.

Nimoy first worked with DeForest Kelley in " Man of Violence ", a season two episode of The Virginian.

He also remained good friends with DeForest Kelley until Kelley's death in 1999.

Star Trek depicts a " troika " of Spock, Kirk, and Doctor Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ); while McCoy often acts as Kirk's conscience, Spock offers the captain an emotionally detached, logical perspective.

The Scott character, as conceived, would have been a semi-regular, but with fellow cast members Leonard Nimoy ( Spock ) and DeForest Kelley ( Dr. McCoy ), was elevated in importance to leads alongside William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk.
