Etowah was originally the southern part of DeKalb County, Alabama.

DeKalb County was formed on March 4, 1837 out of Kane County, Illinois.

In 1852 the first Agricultural Fair was held in Sycamore, under the supervision of the DeKalb Agricultural Society.

Before one year passed the size of the County was diminished through the separation of land areas which, in whole or in part, became present day DeKalb, Fulton, Fayette and Newton Counties.

Fulton County was created from the western half of DeKalb County in 1853.

DeKalb County was created in 1822 from Henry, Gwinnett and Fayette counties.

In 1853, Fulton County was formed from the western half of DeKalb, divided along a perfectly straight and due north / south line down the middle ( along which Moreland Avenue now runs ).

Atlanta grew because the city of Decatur did not want to become the railroad terminus in the 1830s, thus a spot at the Thrasherville encampment in western DeKalb was picked to become Terminus and then Marthasville, before becoming Atlanta a few years after its founding.

DeKalb once extended slightly further north to the Chattahoochee River, but this strip was later given to Milton, and is now the panhandle of Sandy Springs ( though residents there identify with Dunwoody ).

During the Civil War, much of the Battle of Atlanta was fought in DeKalb.

Until the 1960s, DeKalb was a mainly agricultural county, but as the sprawl of the metropolitan Atlanta region expanded, DeKalb became increasingly urbanized.

Leading up to the Civil War, DeKalb County was typical of Southern Mountain counties in that it voted against secession from the United States.

DeKalb County Public Library operates the Lithonia-Davidson Library the main library source in Lithonia, which was once privately owned until being incorporated into the Dekalb County Public Library system in 1947.

An early settler in this part of DeKalb County was Chapman Powell, whose " Medicine House " cabin was built near 1218 Clairmont Road.

As the Erie Lobe retreated, the Eel formed a single stream with what is now upper Cedar Creek in DeKalb and Allen counties.

Bentley first formed the DeKalb Junior Golf Association in 1974, which eventually evolved into the Atlanta Junior Golf Association.

Afton Township was formed from portions of DeKalb Township and Clinton Township on February 18, 1856.
