Dead Kennedys are an American hardcore punk band formed in San Francisco, California in 1978.

Dead Kennedys released five studio albums before disbanding in 1986.

Since the dissolution of Dead Kennedys, Biafra has continued to collaborate and record with other artists, including Mojo Nixon, Al Jourgensen of Ministry, and the Melvins, and has become a spoken word performer, covering political topics in particular.

Dead Kennedys formed in June 1978 in San Francisco, California, when East Bay Ray ( Raymond Pepperell ) advertised for bandmates in the newspaper The Recycler, after seeing a ska-punk show at Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco.

Dead Kennedys played numerous shows at local venues afterwards.

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen wrote in November 1978, " Just when you think tastelessness has reached its nadir, along comes a punk rock group called The Dead Kennedys, which will play at Mabuhay Gardens on Nov. 22, the 15th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination.

On March 25, 1980, Dead Kennedys were invited to perform at the Bay Area Music Awards in San Francisco to major record label artists to give the event some " New Wave credibility ", in the words of the organizers.

Polydor decided to not sign the band after they learned that the Dead Kennedys ' next single was to be titled " Too Drunk to Fuck ".

" and " We've Got a Bigger Problem Now " placed the Dead Kennedys as the spokesmen of social protest, while " Dog Bite ", a cover version of Rawhide and various joke introductions showed a much more whimsical side.

Biafra's appeal was denied ; he had to pay the outstanding royalties and punitive damages, and was forced to hand over the rights to the majority of Dead Kennedys ' back catalogue to the Decay Music partnership.

The jury and judges also noted, in their words, that Biafra “ lacked credibility ” on the songwriting issue and found from evidence presented by both sides that the songwriting credits were due to the entire band, using a clause in the band's written partnership giving a small share of every Dead Kennedys song royalty directly to the band partnership.

Biafra had received sole songwriting credit for most Dead Kennedys songs on all released albums for the last 20 years or so without complaints from the band, though a minority of songs had given credit to certain group members or the entire band as a whole, indicating a system designed to reflect the primary composers rather than a regimented system like the Jagger / Richards partnership ; today, most Kennedys reissues list the songwriters as " Biafra, Dead Kennedys ", indicating Biafra's lyrical contributions — which the band doesn't dispute, or else simply as " Dead Kennedys ").

It was found out that Alternative Tentacles was paying Dead Kennedys less per CD than all the other bands, including Biafra himself, and not informing his other bandmates, which was the fraud.

Biafra accused the band of wanting to license the famous Dead Kennedys song " Holiday in Cambodia " for use in a Levi's jeans commercial, which the band denied.

During 2006, Hart teamed up with fellow Grateful Dead bandmate Bill Kreutzmann, Phish bassist Mike Gordon and former The Other Ones lead guitarist Steve Kimock, to form the Rhythm Devils, a nickname that refers to Hart and Kreutzmann's drum duets and improvisation.

The passage in which Meursault accepts his impending execution was read over the end of the song " Asa Phelps Is Dead " by The Lawrence Arms ; read by guitarist Chris McCaughan, the excerpt parallels certain themes in the song's lyrics by bassist Brendan Kelly.

The lineup included Santana, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Youngbloods, Country Joe and the Fish, It's A Beautiful Day, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Muddy Waters, Buffy St. Marie, John Fahey, guitarist: Sandy Bull, Seattle psychedelic band Easy Chair and others.

Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson produced and performed on three tracks for the record, " Dangerous Game ", " Dead Love ", and " Wasted Me ", but only " Dangerous Game " would appear on the finished product.

* Phil Lesh and Friends ( commonly referred to as Phil Lesh and Phriends ) in 1999 featured Phish's Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell, Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Donna Jean Godchaux, guitarist Steve Kimock, and drummer John Molo performing three nights of Dead and Phish material at The Warfield in San Francisco.

Their new album titled ' Puppet " is set to release on 11 / 1 / 11 Members of the band include Stabbing Westward and Econoline Crush drummer Johnny Haro, Murderdolls-guitarist Eric Griffin, bassist Martin Kelly from Living Dead Lights and guitarist Ryan Seelback.

Surf music also influenced a number of later rock musicians, including Keith Moon of The Who, East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys, and Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago.

Some controversy exists as to the role of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia in the making of the album.

Also in the band were future members of the band Kingfish, which featured Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir.

A well-known song by The Grateful Dead was written by lyricist Robert Hunter and guitarist Jerry Garcia in 1969.

Jim Fairchild of Grandaddy and All Smiles replaced Marr as guitarist, when Marr left the band after joining The Cribs, beginning with the support of No One's First and You're Next, which was released on August 4, 2009, composed of unreleased tracks from the recording sessions of Good News for People Who Love Bad News and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.

Raymond John Pepperell ( born November 17, 1958 in Oakland, California ), better known by his stage name East Bay Ray, is a guitarist best known for his membership in the San Francisco Bay area-based punk band Dead Kennedys.

In August 2010 the Dead Kennedys announced plans for a short East Coast tour.

In her essay Is Common Human Decency a Scarce Commodity in Popular Literature ?, Margaret Compton contrasts the ending of The Spy Who Came in From the Cold with the ending of Call for the Dead: " Le Carré's début book ends with Smiley feeling deeply guilty about having killed Dieter Frey, the idealistic East German spy who had been Smiley's agent and friend ( and, in effect, his adopted son ) during the Second World War.

When the Beach Boys and the Grateful Dead united on stage to perform a brief set at New York City's Filmore East, they performed " Searchin '" and " Riot in Cell Block No. 9.
