Naoise and his brothers fought valiantly, aided by a few Red Branch warriors, before Conchobar evoked their oath of loyalty to him and had Deirdre dragged to his side.

After the death of Naoise, Conchobar took Deirdre as his wife.

The child is named Deirdre, and Conchobar decides to have her brought up in seclusion from men, intending to marry her when she comes of age.

When they arrive, Fiachu, Naoise and his brothers are murdered on Conchobar's orders by Éogan mac Durthacht, and Deirdre is forced to marry Conchobar.

Conchobar forcibly marries Deirdre, who later commits suicide after he offers her to Éogan.

Naoise knew that Deirdre belonged to Conchobar and tried to reject her, but eventually gave in and they eloped.

On the way back to Emain Macha, however, the group was waylaid by Conchobar, who had Naoise and his brothers murdered by Eogan mac Durthacht, king of Fernmag so he could forcibly marry Deirdre.

Deirdre committed suicide by leaning out of her chariot and dashing her head against a rock after Conchobar threatened to give her to Eogan mac Duthacht.

The story of Gráinne and Diarmuid is one of a number of instances in Irish mythology of a love triangle between a young man, a young woman and an aging suitor, the other most famous instance being between Naoise, Deirdre and Conchobar mac Nessa in the Ulster Cycle.

He was present at the birth of Deirdre and prophesied her tragic fate, but Conchobar ignored him.
