Della Rovere is a noble family of Italy.

Coming from modest beginnings in Savona, Liguria, the family rose to prominence through nepotism and ambitious marriages arranged by two Della Rovere popes, Francesco della Rovere, who ruled as Pope Sixtus IV ( 1471 – 1484 ) and his nephew Giuliano ( Pope Julius II, 1503 – 1513 ).

All persons have the surname Della Rovere unless otherwise indicated.

The influence of his friends procured for him, from Pope Paul II ( 1464 – 71 ), the bishopric of Savona, and in 1473, with the support of Giuliano Della Rovere, later Pope Julius II, he was made cardinal by Pope Sixtus IV, whom he succeeded on 29 August 1484 as Pope Innocent VIII.

Della Rovere, jealous and angry, accused Borgia of being elected over him by means of simony and a secret agreement with Ascanio Sforza.

Della Rovere then succeeded by dexterous diplomacy in tricking the weakened Cesare Borgia into supporting him by offering him money and continued papal backing for Borgia policies in the Romagna, promises which he disregarded upon election.

Giuliano Della Rovere thenceforth took the name of his fourth century predecessor, Julius I.

In the fresco by Melozzo da Forlì he is accompanied by his Della Rovere and Riario nephews, not all of whom were made cardinals: the protonotary apostolic Pietro Riario ( on his right ), the future Pope Julius II standing before him, and Girolamo Riario and Giovanni della Rovere behind the kneeling Platina, author of the first humanist history of the Popes.

The secular fortunes of the Della Rovere began when Sixtus invested his nephew Giovanni with the lordship of Senigallia and arranged his marriage to the daughter of Federico III da Montefeltro, duke of Urbino ; from this union came a line of Della Rovere dukes of Urbino that lasted until the line expired in 1631.

Pius X did not follow this tradition and left Della Chiesa waiting for almost seven years.

At first the two did not even know the others ’ identity ; later they met and became part of a poetic movement called the Della Cruscans.

His policy, however, brought the Milanese treasury to collapse ; the use of often reckless mercenary units further angered the population, granting an increasing support for the Della Torre's traditional enemies, the Visconti.

Honthorst became especially noted for his depiction of artificially lit scenes, receiving the nickname " Gherardo delle Notti " ( Gerard of the night ), Cardinal Scipio Borghese was another important patron who secured important commisssions for him at San Silvesto Della Mariro, Montecompatri, and at Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome.

From 1471 to 1503, in which year he was elected Pope Julius II, Cardinal Della Rovere, the nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, effected notable rebuilding.

The wedding was celebrated by Cardinal Della Costa and was blessed by Pope Pius XII, to whom Bartali donated a bicycle.
