For the national parliament, Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle ( PDI-P, led by Sukarno's daughter Megawati Sukarnoputri ) won 34 % of the vote ; Golkar ( Suharto's party ; formerly the only legal party of government ) 22 %; United Development Party ( PPP, led by Hamzah Haz ) 12 %; and National Awakening Party ( PKB, led by Abdurrahman Wahid ) 10 %.

In August 1990, the Democratic Awakening a minor member of the governing coalition, merged with the CDU.

The merger brought Democratic Awakening spokeswoman and future Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel into the party.

Democratic Awakening () was an East German opposition political movement.

Although Alliance for Germany won the elections, Alliance member Democratic Awakening only collected 0. 9 % of votes, amounting to four seats in Volkskammer.

On August 5, 1990 Democratic Awakening ceased to exist after merging into the East German CDU, which in turn on 3 October 1990 merged into its West German counterpart, the Christian Democratic Union ( CDU ).

It consisted of the Christian Democratic Union, Democratic Awakening and the German Social Union.

Based on the final allocation of seats in the People's Representative Council, Golkar, the Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle, the National Awakening Party, the United Development Party, the Democratic Party, the Prosperous Justice Party, and the National Mandate Party were qualified to submit candidates for the country's first direct presidential election later in the year.

Seven political parties met these criteria: the Party of the Functional Groups ( Golkar ), the Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle ( PDI – P ), the National Awakening Party ( PKB ), the United Development Party ( PPP ), the Democratic Party ( PD ), the Prosperous Justice Party ( PKS ), and the National Mandate Party ( PAN ).

Among them were the Neues Forum ( New Forum ), Demokratischer Aufbruch ( Democratic Awakening ), and Demokratie Jetzt ( Democracy Now ).

In 1998 it joined forces with the Social Democrat Party, the Women's Alliance ( Samtök um kvennalista ) and the National Awakening ( Þjóðvaki ) in forming the Social Democratic Alliance ( Samfylkingin ), a broad center-left party.

Other members include the Council of Iraq's Notables, the Iraqi Democrats Movement, the Democratic National Awakening Party, the Loyalty to Iraq Grouping, and the Iraqi Independents Association all of which are much smaller.

Al Sharpton, former Pentecostal minister, now a Baptist minister and Civil rights leader, during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 said that asking whether gays or lesbians should be able to get married was insulting: " That's like saying you give blacks, or whites, or Latinos the right to shack up – but not get married [...] It's like asking ' do I support black marriage or white marriage '...

In the December 1994 Wild Forest Review, Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair wrote " The mainstream environmental movement was elitist, highly paid, detached from the people, indifferent to the working class, and a firm ally of big government .… The environmental movement is now accurately perceived as just another well-financed and cynical special interest group, its rancid infrastructure supported by Democratic Party operatives and millions in grants from corporate foundations .”

Some notable operations include: the Chadian – Libyan conflict in 1969 – 72 ( the first time that the Foreign Legion was sent in operations after the Algerian War ), 1978 – 79, and 1983 – 87 ; Kolwezi in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 1978 ; Rwanda in 1990 – 94 ; and the Côte d ' Ivoire ( the Ivory Coast ) in 2002 to the present.

The pro-business Free Democratic Party ( FDP ) had been in coalition with the SPD, but now it changed direction.

Armenian militia, or " fedayee " played a major role in the independence of various Armenian states, including the now inexistent Western Armenia, the Democratic Republic of Armenia, and the currently de-facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Roosevelt's party landed in Mombasa, British East Africa ( now Kenya ), traveled to the Belgian Congo ( now Democratic Republic of the Congo ) before following the Nile to Khartoum in modern Sudan.

However, most former Christian Democrats are now affiliated to the centre-right The People of Freedom and the centre-left Democratic Party.

Its former political head Hashim Thaçi is now the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Prime Minister of Kosovo since January 2008.
