Border clashes worsened when the Democratic Kampuchea military attacked villages in Vietnam.

A new constitution in January 1976 established Democratic Kampuchea as a Communist People's Republic, and a 250-member Assembly of the Representatives of the People of Kampuchea ( PRA ) was selected in March to choose the collective leadership of a State Presidium, the chairman of which became the head of state.

Life in ' Democratic Kampuchea ' was strict and brutal.

Over 4 million Cambodians ( about 90 % of eligible voters ) participated in the May 1993 elections, although the Khmer Rouge or Party of Democratic Kampuchea ( PDK ), whose forces were never actually disarmed or demobilized, barred some people from participating.

Democratic Kampuchea was the name of the state as controlled by the government of the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979.

After taking power, the Khmer Rouge leadership renamed the country Democratic Kampuchea.

It was used to refer to a succession of Communist parties in Cambodia which evolved into the Communist Party of Kampuchea ( CPK ) and later the Party of Democratic Kampuchea.

The organization was also known as the Khmer Communist Party and the National Army of Democratic Kampuchea.

The history of the communist movement in Cambodia can be divided into six phases: the emergence of the Indochinese Communist Party ( ICP ), whose members were almost exclusively Vietnamese, before World War II ; the 10-year struggle for independence from the French, when a separate Cambodian communist party, the Kampuchean ( or Khmer ) People's Revolutionary Party ( KPRP ), was established under Vietnamese auspices ; the period following the Second Party Congress of the KPRP in 1960, when Saloth Sar ( Pol Pot after 1976 ) and other future Khmer Rouge leaders gained control of its apparatus ; the revolutionary struggle from the initiation of the Khmer Rouge insurgency in 1967 – 68 to the fall of the Lon Nol government in April 1975 ; the Democratic Kampuchea regime, from April 1975 to January 1979 ; and the period following the Third Party Congress of the KPRP in January 1979, when Hanoi effectively assumed control over Cambodia's government and communist party.

From their ranks came the men and women who returned home and took command of the party apparatus during the 1960s, led an effective insurgency against Lon Nol from 1968 until 1975, and established the regime of Democratic Kampuchea.

Communist regimes were established in Vietnam's neighbour states in 1975, such as in Laos and the creation of the Khmer Rouge regime of Democratic Kampuchea ( Cambodia ).

From 1976 to 1979, he also served as the prime minister of Democratic Kampuchea.

With the Vietnamese Occupation of Democratic Kampuchea ( Cambodia ) on December 25, 1978, Thailand at once became the " real " front line state in fighting against communism, as the Kingdom was surrounded by three unfriendly, communist Indochinese countries and a socialist Burma under General Ne Win.

The list also includes a considerable number of states that ceased to exist during the 1990s, most notably the German Democratic Republic, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Democratic Yemen, People's Republic of Kampuchea ( today: Cambodia ) and Zaire ( today: Democratic Republic of the Congo ).

The FUNSK invaded Cambodia along with the Vietnamese Army and overthrew the Democratic Kampuchea Pol Pot state.

Other countries with tight emigration restrictions at one time included Angola, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Somalia, Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Kampuchea ( Cambodia from 1975-1979 ), Laos, North Vietnam, Iraq, South Yemen and Cuba.

He was named by Pol Pot as leader of the national army of Democratic Kampuchea.

The origin of the party can be traced back to the ideological divisions in the Labour Party in the 1950s ( with its forerunner being the Campaign for Democratic Socialism established to support the Gaitskellites ), but publicly lies in the 1979 Dimbleby Lecture given by Roy Jenkins as he neared the end of his presidency of the European Commission.

The conservatives opposed the far right dictatorship of the colonels ( 1967 – 1974 ) and established the New Democratic Party following the fall of the dictatorship.

A branch of " progressive " communists led by Algirdas Brazauskas established the Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania in 1992.

Under the banner of Christian Social Party, he later on established a one-party dictatorship rule largely modeled after fascism in Italy, banning all other Austrian parties including the Social Democratic Labour Party ( SDAPÖ ).

The Finnish labour movement, which emerged at the end of the 19th century from folk, temperance, and religious movements, as well as fennomania, had a Finnish nationalist, working-class character, and was represented by the Social Democratic Party, established in 1899.

When the joint trusteeship failed due to Soviet intransigence, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ( DPRK ) was established in 1948.
