Charles Demuth ( November 8, 1883 – October 23, 1935 ) was an American watercolorist who turned to oils late in his career, developing a style of painting known as Precisionism.

Demuth was a lifelong resident of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Other major Wagnerian baritones have included Hotter's predecessors Leopold Demuth, Anton van Rooy, Hermann Weil, Clarence Whitehill, Friedrich Schorr, Rudolf Bockelmann and Hans Hermann Nissen.

He enrolled in Belhaven University later that year where he met his future wife, Karen Demuth, with whom he would have three children.

In addition to his instruction of East Coast artists like Charles Demuth, Silas Dustin, Marsden Hartley, M. Jean McLane, Georgia O ' Keeffe, John Marin, George Pearse Ennis, Leopold Seyffert and Edward Charles Volkert, he had an important role in influencing California art at the turn of the century, especially in interactions with Arthur Frank Mathews, Xavier Martinez and Percy Gray.

From 1925-29 he directed the Intimate Gallery, showcasing the work of American artists, including Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove, John Marin, Paul Strand, Charles Demuth, and Georgia O ' Keeffe, who by then had become his wife.

The home he shared with his mother is now the Demuth Museum, which showcases his work.

During the 1920s Gerald Murphy, along with other American modernist painters in Europe, notably Charles Demuth and Stuart Davis created paintings prefiguring the pop art movement that contained pop culture imagery such as mundane objects culled from American commercial products and advertising design.

There are allegations that Marx also fathered a son, Freddy, out of wedlock by his housekeeper, Helene Demuth.

Demuth, van Rooy, Weil and Whitehill were at their peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries while Schorr, Bockelmann and Nissen were stars of the 1920s and 1930s.

During the 1920s American artists Gerald Murphy, Charles Demuth and Stuart Davis created paintings prefiguring the pop art movement that contained pop culture imagery such as mundane objects culled from American commercial products and advertising design.

The work exhibits characteristics of a symphonic poem, and some musicologists, such as Norman Demuth and Julien Tiersot, consider it the first of its genre, preceding Liszt's compositions.

Among the many 20th century artists who produced important works in watercolor, mention must be made of Wassily Kandinsky, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Egon Schiele and Raoul Dufy ; in America the major exponents included Charles Burchfield, Edward Hopper, Georgia O ' Keeffe, Charles Demuth, and John Marin, 80 % of whose total output is in watercolor.

Sheeler and the modernists Charles Demuth and Ralston Crawford were referred to as Precisionists for their sharply defined renderings of machines and architectural forms.

Beginning in 1918, O ' Keeffe came to know the many early American modernists who were part of Stieglitz's circle of artists, including Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Paul Strand and Edward Steichen.

" Describing its importance, Judith H. Dobrzynski in The Wall Street Journal wrote: " It's the best work in a genre Demuth created, the " poster portrait ".

The work is one of nine poster portraits Demuth created to honor his creative friends.

In 1927, Demuth started a series of seven panel paintings depicting factory buildings in his hometown.

Six of those paintings are highlighted in Chimneys and Towers: Charles Demuth ’ s Late Paintings of Lancaster, a 2007 Amon Carter Museum retrospective of his work, displayed in 2008 at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
