Her Shakespearean heroines-Beatrice, Portia, Desdemona and Ophelia – were no less successful than her comic characters – Miss Hoyden, Biddy Tipkin, Lucy Lockit and Miss Prue.

After Lady Macbeth she played Desdemona, Rosalind, Ophelia and Volumnia, all with great success ; but it was as Queen Catherine in Henry VIII that she discovered a part almost as well adapted to her acting powers as that of Lady Macbeth.

Desdemona dies in an entirely different manner in Cinthio's tale ; the Moor commissions his ensign to bludgeon her to death with a sand-filled stocking.
