Despair is the opposite of hope.

In Belgium, where the Decadents and Symbolists were as numerous as their French counterparts, Félicien Rops depicted a grinning Pierrot who is witness to an unromantic backstage scene ( Blowing Cupid's Nose ) and James Ensor painted Pierrots ( and other masks ) obsessively, sometimes rendering them prostrate in the ghastly light of dawn ( The Strange Masks ), sometimes isolating Pierrot in their midst, his head drooping in despondency ( Pierrot's Despair ), sometimes augmenting his company with a smiling, stein-hefting skeleton ( Pierrot and Skeleton in Yellow ).

In the conversation at the table, it is revealed that Despair was once destroyed and " another aspect of one of us had to reassume the position " thereby illustrating that the Endless, in their individual forms can perish only to be reborn.

Despair asks if Destruction mentioned her before leaving and is saddened that she did not get to see him one last time.

Such a passing and rebirth is not new to the Endless ; Despair is also a second aspect.

Desire is the third youngest of the Endless and the twin of Despair.

Desire sometimes acts in concert with Despair and Delirium ; the relationship is not clear, however, and Desire is much more distant from its siblings than Despair or Delirium.

Despair is one of the Endless, fictional characters from Neil Gaiman's comic book series, The Sandman.

Despair is the twin sister of Desire.

Despair sometimes acts together with Desire when she / he is plotting against the elder Endless, most notably when Despair takes on a challenge with Morpheus over the life of Joshua Abraham Norton, seemingly at Desire's bidding.
