Among the Devas are the Ushas, whose name means " dawn ", and Indra, the leader of the Devas.

In later texts, such as the Puranas and the Itihasas, the Devas are the good beings, and the Asura are the bad ones.

The retinue of Indra consists chiefly of the Devas, gandharvas, considered in the epics as the celestial musicians ; and apsaras, lovely nymphs, who are frequently employed by the gods to make the pious devotee desist from carrying his austere practices to an extent that might render him dangerous to their power.

Hindu Literature mention that there are 330 million Devas and 660 million Asuras.

Devas are also the maintainers of the realms as ordained by the Trimurti.

The main Devas addressed in the Rig Veda are Indra, Agni ( fire ) and Soma, the latter two representing modes of sacrifice, called yagna.

Nature Devas are responsible for elements or objects such as fire, air, rain and trees-most of them assumed a minor role in the later religion.

In actuality, Ishvara Brahman is the only Ultimate Reality, and all Devas are simply mundane manifestations of Him.

Vishnu again comes to the rescue in the form of a beautiful damsel, Mohini and tricks the Asuras and retrieves the potion which is distributed to the Devas.

Then, a Yaksha told the Devas that he alone is enough to kill all evil elements on the Earth, and it was not necessary for Lord Vishnu to descend to Earth.

Devas accepted for that and so Sivan performs Tavam towards Vishnu.
