The Social Democratic Party ( SPD ) and The Left ( Die Linke ) took control of the city government after the 2001 state election and won another term in the 2006 state election.

Since 1961, only two new parties ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and PDS / Die Linke ) have entered the Bundestag.

After negotiations, the Saarland Greens rejected the option of a left-wing ' red-red-green ' coalition with the SPD and The Left ( Die Linke ) in order to form a centre-right state government with the CDU and Free Democratic Party ( FDP ), a historical first time that a Jamaica coalition has formed in German politics.

On June 16, 2007, the two groupings merged to form a unified new party called The Left ( Die Linke ).

These include the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung ( Social Democratic Party-aligned ), the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung ( Christian Democratic Union-aligned ), the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung ( Christian Social Union-aligned ), the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung ( aligned with the Greens ), Friedrich Naumann Foundation ( Free Democratic Party-aligned ) and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation ( aligned with Die Linke ).

In the 1990s, the left and moderate wings of the party drifted apart, culminating in a secession of a significant number of party members, which later joined the socialist party WASG, which later merged into The Left ( Die Linke ) party.

In 2007 the PDS merged with the Labour and Social Justice – The Electoral Alternative ( Arbeit und soziale Gerechtigkeit – Die Wahlalternative, WASG ) to create the new party The Left ( Die Linke ), which has resulted in a higher acceptance in western states, the party now also being represented in the parliaments of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland, Hesse and Hamburg.

It was renamed PDS, and, later, merged with the Western leftist party WASG to form the party Die Linke ( The Left ).

The party was renamed SED-PDS in 1989, PDS in 1990, Die Linkspartei. PDS in 2005 and Die Linke in 2007.

Dr. Gregor Gysi (; born 16 January 1948 ) is a German attorney and key politician of the socialist left-wing political party The Left ( Die Linke ).

The four parties having more than 5 percent in recent polls ( minimum to qualify ) are the conservative CDU, the social-democratic SPD, the ecologist Green Party ( GAL ), the left-wing Die Linke.

In June 2007 he became co-chairman of the The Left ( Die Linke ) party, formed by a merger of the PDS and the much smaller Labour and Social Justice – The Electoral Alternative.

Gesine Lötzsch løːtʃ ( born on August 7, 1961 ) is a German politician of the left-wing party Die Linke (" The Left ").

Born at Berlin-Lichtenberg in what then was East Germany, Lötzsch joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany in 1984 and continued a member of its successor parties: the SED-PDS ( 1989 – 1990 ), the PDS, ( 1990 – 2005 ), Die Linkspartei. PDS ( 2005 – 2007 ), and from 2007, Die Linke.

In Germany CWI members have been active in the new WASG since its foundation in 2004 and in December 2005 were elected part of the new leadership of its Berlin district that ran candidates on a clear anti-cuts programme in the 2006 Berlin regional election, gaining 3. 1 % and several borough council seats, but the Berlin WASG later merged into Die Linke.

In 1996 Action Concept engaged him for the role he has played successfully up to now: Semir Gerkhan in the German television series " Alarm für Cobra 11 – Die Autobahnpolizei ".
