After he disappeared from The FBI, his X-Files partner Dana Scully, his boss Walter Skinner, and his replacements John Doggett and Monica Reyes would ask for the assistance of The Lone Gunmen as well.

Previous recurring characters Monica Reyes ( Annabeth Gish ) and Walter Skinner ( Mitch Pileggi ) were billed as main characters for this season, which follows Dana Scully ( Gillian Anderson ), John Doggett ( Robert Patrick ) and Reyes on their hunt to reveal a government conspiracy who are creating " Super Soldiers ".

During this time Doggett and Kersh developed a bitter enmity, similar to the early relationship between Mulder and Walter Skinner.

Scully, Skinner, Doggett, and Reyes would attend their funeral, and Scully proclaimed that The Lone Gunmen " meant so much to.

Later, Skinner and Deputy Director Alvin Kersh confront the " Toothpick Man " in Kersh's office, after Agents John Doggett and Monica Reyes discover that the X-Files office had been emptied out.

Skinner refuses, and Krycek has a violent confrontation with John Doggett before escaping.

In the end, Kersh showed a heroic side during the series finale " The Truth ", when he helped Doggett and Skinner free Mulder from a military prison.

In 2000, Agent Doggett was assigned by Deputy Director Alvin Kersh to head up the manhunt to find Special Agent Fox Mulder.

The proposed redistricting would split Travis County into five districts, and make it unrealistic for Doggett to be re-elected in any of them except the new 35th district ( which by weight of population would be more of a San Antonio district than an Austin district ).

There is a legend that in 1715, Doggett was rescued by a Watermen after falling overboard whilst crossing the Thames near Embankment, although this has always been dismissed, along with other myths, by the Fishmongers ' Company, the story continues that in gratitude for his rescue, he offered a rowing wager to the fastest of six young Waterman in their first year of freedom, over the course between " The Swan " pub at London Bridge and " The Swan " pub at Chelsea.

However, Follmer's unresolved relationship with Reyes also served to heighten the conflict between Doggett and Follmer, as both men had feelings for her.

Doggett asks Scully for help on a case involving an EPA official, Carl Wormus ( Nicholas Walker ), who died after his car was forced off a bridge by a woman he picked up.

After doing an illegal autopsy on Wormus, Alvin Kersh ( James Pickens, Jr .) sends Brad Follmer ( Cary Elwes ) to locate Doggett.

After his abduction by aliens at the end of season seven, his role in the show is diminished and much of his work is taken on by Agent John Doggett.

After gaining a Masters degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University, Doggett went on to work for the New York Police Department from 1987 – 1995, eventually becoming a detective in the Fugitive Division's Warrant section.

The manhunt was unsuccessful and Doggett was demoted to work on the X-Files with Special Agent Dana Scully.

Patrick had an obligation to work on another series after being cast as Doggett.

Some members of the fanbase criticized the introduction of Doggett, claiming that the character had been intentionally created to replace previous lead Fox Mulder's work.

Robert Patrick was awarded a Saturn Award in the category " Best Television Actor " in 2001 for his role as Doggett, winning over such nominees as Richard Dean Anderson for his work as Jack O ' Neill on Stargate SG-1.

With her partner John Doggett they work in the X-Files office, which is concerned with the investigation of paranormal cases, dubbed X-Files.

However, the writers wanted a different kind of believer character to work off of the skeptical nature of John Doggett, who had already been established.

After Duchovny's semi-departure following the seventh season of the show, the producers introduced Special Agent John Jay Doggett, played by actor Robert Patrick.
