The franchise again received popular attention in 2004 with the release of Doom 3, a retelling of the original game using new technology, and an associated 2005 Doom motion picture.

On May 7, 2008, following speculation by John Carmack at QuakeCon on August 3, 2007, Doom 4 was announced as in production.

The game is neither a sequel to Doom 3 nor a new beginning of the franchise and it will use the company's new id Tech 5 engine.

The setting for Doom Resurrection takes place parallel to Doom 3, and it uses characters and art from it.

The franchise remained in that state until 2000, when Doom 3 was announced.

A retelling of the original Doom using entirely new graphics technology, Doom 3 was hyped to provide as large a leap in realism and interactivity as the original Doom, and helped renew interest in the Doom franchise when it was released.

Id Software has developed their own game engine for each of their titles when moving to the next technological milestone, including Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Shadowcaster, DOOM, Quake, Quake II, and Quake III, as well as technology used in making Doom 3.

However Id Tech 4 had far fewer licensees than the Unreal Engine from Epic Games, due to the long development time that went into Doom 3 which Id had to release before licensing out that engine to others.

On August 4, 2011, John Carmack revealed during his QuakeCon 2011 keynote that they will be releasing the source code of Doom 3 ( Id Tech 4 ) during the year.

This has been restarted from 2008 onward with Matthew J. Costello's ( a story consultant for Doom 3 and now Rage ) new Doom 3 novels: Worlds on Fire and Maelstrom.

Some Id Software titles ported to Linux are Doom ( the first Id Software game to be ported ), Quake, Quake II, Quake III Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Doom 3, Quake 4, and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

After essentially founding an entire genre with this game, Id Software created Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake II, Quake III Arena, Quake 4 and Doom 3.

Id Software made its mark in video game history with the shareware release of Doom, and eventually revisited the theme of this game in 2004 with their release of Doom 3.

On June 26, 2009, John Carmack released Doom Resurrection, a new game developed by Escalation Studios for iOS and published by id Software.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil features a clone of the game within one of the usable computer terminals found in the game, which is called " Hellanoid ".

The game was followed by Resurrection of Evil, an expansion pack developed by Nerve Software in April 2005, while a Doom film loosely based on the series was released in October 2005.

The expansion, entitled Resurrection of Evil, was developed by Nerve Software, a company that had partnered with id Software on several other projects, including Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the Xbox conversion of Doom.

Resurrection of Evils reception was not as positive as it had been for Doom 3, but still received generally favorable reviews from the industry's critics.

In early 2008, the Doom novels were restarted by Matthew J. Costello, a professional author who had worked on the story and scripts for Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil.

Thence he will go on to the Resurrection and Ascension, the Assumption of Our Lady, the Finding of the Cross, and then to Antichrist and to the Day of Doom.

Highly regarded hip-hop albums such as Illmatic by Nas, Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sunday by Cypress Hill, Resurrection by Common, Big Shots by Charizma, Operation: Doomsday by MF Doom, Check Your Head by Beastie Boys and Quality Control by Jurassic 5 have featured samples from the film.

She also produced the iPhone-only game Doom Resurrection.

In Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, another stargate is opened when the player faces the first Hunter.

Resurrection of Evil also features twelve new single player levels, six new enemies including the hunter, four new multiplayer maps as well as new weapons such as the double-barreled shotgun originating from Doom II.

In the PC version of Resurrection of Evil, as well as in any version of Doom 3, the player can't wield a flashlight and a weapon at the same time, forcing him to switch constantly between the two.

While Doom 3 was developed by id Software, Resurrection of Evil was co-developed with Nerve Software.

Although not as well received as Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil garnered mostly favorable reviews ; the Windows version holds a score of 78 % on the review aggregator site Metacritic, while the Xbox version is rated at 77 %.

A player in the Black Hands, although he has occasionally acted as GM for both them and other groups in the comic, usually running his trademark " never-completed " adventure The Temple Of Horrendous Doom ( a reference of a pair of real D & D modules, Tomb Of Horrors and The Temple of Elemental Evil ) which " no-one has ever completed without dying ".
