In 1869 the family settled in Dorking, Surrey — about 12 miles from Downe, home of Charles Darwin — where Elizabeth began evangelistic and philanthropic work, first organizing a Sunday school and then a " Coffee-Room ," where food and non-alcoholic drinks were served.

In 1750, the construction of a turnpike road made Dorking a staging post on the route to Brighton and the coast.

Leith Hill to the south west of Dorking, Surrey, England, reaches above sea level, the highest point on the Greensand Ridge, and is the second highest point in south-east England, after Walbury Hill near Hungerford, West Berkshire, high.

A memorial was erected on the A24 London to Worthing Road in Holmwood, just south of Dorking.

When the Burford Bridge was rebuilt in 1937, excavations revealed a " flint-surfaced approach to ford at low level having all the signs of Roman workmanship " suggesting that Stane Street ( which ran from London to Chichester via Dorking ) crossed the river at this point.

Between Clapham and Dorking, the A24 closely follows the route of the old Roman road Stane Street.

South of Dorking, near South Holmwood, Stane Street takes a line sighted from London Bridge to Pulborough with most of this section still in use as the modern A29 which follows the line very closely through Billingshurst as far as Pulborough.

The A24 London Road runs from Merton to Ewell along the course of the Roman road, and Stane Street leaves Ewell connecting it towards Leatherhead and Dorking to the south-west.

The Bull's Head in South Street had a famous coachman, William Broad, whose portrait hangs in Dorking Museum in West Street.

Dorking held a big wheat and cattle market in the High Street.
