He was succeeded by Datuk Hussein Onn, the son of UMNO ’ s founder Onn Jaafar, and then by Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, who had been Education Minister since 1981, and who held power for 22 years.

In 2003 Dr Mahathir, Malaysia's longest serving prime minister, voluntarily retired in favour of his new deputy, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Abdullah was under heavy pressure to step down after many within his UMNO party including former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohammad openly asked him to take full responsibility on the dismal performance during the 12th general election in March 2008.

On 19 May 2008, the dispute between Mahathir and Abdullah reached a " shocking " stage when Dr Mahathir, who had served as UMNO President for 22 years, announced that he was quitting the party after having lost confidence in Abdullah Badawi's leadership, and that he would only rejoin the party after Abdullah had stepped down as UMNO President and Prime Minister.

In 1988, Lord President Tun Salleh Abas was brought before a tribunal convened by the Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad on the grounds of misconduct.

His political involvement were marred by his involvement with Harun Idris and Dr Mahathir Mohamad, creating the infamous racial troubles known as May 13 incident, a day that changed Malaysian politics where the entire nation lived in infamy.

As a consequence of this initiative, the then young leaders of mixed heritage in UMNO, such as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, were drafted into higher echelons of the political establishment.

During the 1987 UMNO leadership crisis, Tun Hussein fell out with Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, supporting Team B along with Tunku Abdul Rahman.

In 1997, when Malaysians were invited to name the flag, then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohammad picked the name Jalur Gemilang to project the country's onward drive towards continuous growth and success.

Tun Dr Mahathir mentioned that one of the problems with titles in Malaysia is the numbers given out.

Dr Martin King ( Jon Rollason ), a thinly disguised rewriting of Keel, saw action in only three episodes produced from scripts written for the first series.
