Josef van Schaik, a fellow KVP politician, took over and succeeded in forming a broad based cabinet by offering the socialist Willem Drees the function of Prime Minister, Josef van Schaik himself being satisfied with the function of Deputy Prime Minister.

Both his sons Jan Drees and Willem Drees Jr. were active members of the Dutch Labour Party, but left the party around 1970 to join the Democratic Socialists ' 70.

The Drees cabinet laid the foundation for the welfare state and decolonization of the Dutch East Indies.

Willem Drees () ( July 5, 1886 – May 14, 1988 ) was a Dutch politician of the Labour Party ( PvdA ).

After the Dutch general election of 1948, Drees became Prime Minister of the Netherlands, leading the Cabinets Drees-Van Schaik, Drees I, Drees II and Drees III.

The cabinet of Willem Drees banned the import of the edition of the German magazine and on 28 June 1956 appointed a commission of enquiry of former ministers Louis Beel and Gerbrandy and former governor-general of the Dutch East Indies A. W. L. Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer, the Beel Commission.

A popular Dutch story ( never confirmed ) says that in the late 1940s the wife of the then Prime minister, Willem Drees, served coffee and one biscuit to a visiting American diplomat, who then became convinced that the money from the Marshall Plan was being well-spent.

Drees appointed Beel High Commissioner of the Crown in the Dutch East Indies ( now Indonesia ), as a successor to Lieutenant Governor General Hubertus van Mook, a man of proven managerial abilities, who had to resign unwillingly.

Between 1948 and 1952 the VVD took part in the broad cabinets led by the Labour Party Prime Minister Willem Drees.

For 22 years between 1919 and 1941 Drees also held a seat on the Provincial Council of South Holland and for 19 years between 1927 and 1946 one on the Social Democratic Workers ' Party executive.

They invited Beel to remain as Minister of the Interior in their cabinet ( the Cabinet Schermerhorn / Drees ).

Since 1948, these cabinets were led by PvdA Prime Minister Willem Drees.

In response to the growing power of the New Left group, a group of older, centrist party members, led by Willem Drees ' son, Willem Drees Junior founded the New Right.

Besides that, De Jong is the overall second oldest Prime Minister of the Netherlands, after Willem Drees who lived to.

He previously served as Minister of Economic Affairs from September 2, 1952 until May 19, 1959 in the Cabinets Drees III, IV and Beel II.

Representing this party he became between September 2, 1952 and July 24, 1963, successively Minister of Economic Affairs in the Cabinets Drees III, Drees IV and Beel II.

After his premiership, Drees retired from active politics.

Willem Drees died on May 14, 1988 at the age of, and is one of the few longest lived state leaders who became a centenarian.

Drees was chosen as the best Prime Minister of the Netherlands after World War II after an opinion polling conducted by the VPRO in 2006.
