Anna Elisabeth Franziska Adolphine Wilhelmine Louise Maria, Freiin von Droste zu Hülshoff, known as Annette von Droste-Hülshoff (; January 10 or 12 1797 – May 24 1848 ), was a 19th century German writer.

The affair was a catastrophe for Droste and damaged her future marriage prospects.

Droste intended to write one poem for each Sunday and Feast Day of the church year and the cycle was meant to please her devout grandmother, but when Droste had completed 25 poems, she realised they were too personal and showed too many traces of spiritual doubt, so she shelved the work until 1839 when a friend persuaded her to complete the series.

In time, Droste was acknowledged as the greatest female German author of the 19th century.

Owing partly to the wise statesmanship of Count Spiegel, archbishop of Cologne, an arrangement was made by which the thorny question of " mixed " marriages ( i. e., between Catholic and Protestant ) would have been happily solved ; but the archbishop died in 1835, the arrangement was never ratified, and the Prussian king was foolish enough to appoint as Spiegel's successor the narrow-minded partisan Baron Droste.

Bunsen rashly recommended that Droste should be seized, but the coup was so clumsily attempted, that the incriminating documents were, it is said, destroyed in advance.

Droste and Bear were subsequently joined by bass guitarist and producer Chris Taylor, and performed four shows together as a three-piece.

Ed Droste has stated that many songs ( such as " Central and Remote ", " Reprise " and " Campfire ") will not be played again unless backed by an orchestra.

This caused Droste embarrassment as Schücking had made use of private information he could only have derived from conversations with her.

Droste disagreed: she had no problem composing poetry in her head but had difficulty writing it down and the failure of her first book had not encouraged her to make the effort.

The profits from her book had helped Droste to buy a small house near Meersburg, where she lived from 1846 until her death in May 1848, probably from tuberculosis.

Droste trusted Sprickmann's judgement and showed him many of her early works, including the unfinished tragedy Berta oder die Alpen (" Berta, or The Alps ", 1813 ).

Droste now entrusted the publication of her first book to two friends, Christoph Bernhard Schlüter and Wilhelm Junkmann.

Droste found the failure of her book " humiliating.

The following autumn and winter, Droste and Schücking stayed at her brother-in-law's castle at Meersburg on Lake Constance, where Schücking had been given the task of cataloguing Laßberg's book collection.
