Ernest Gary Gygax ( ; July 27, 1938 – March 4, 2008 ) was an American writer and game designer best known for co-creating the pioneering role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons ( D & D ) with Dave Arneson.

Another RPG publisher, TSR, Inc., original publisher of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, included in one of that game's earlier supplements, Deities & Demigods ( originally published in 1980 and later renamed to " Legends & Lore "), a section on the Cthulhu Mythos ; TSR, Inc. later agreed to remove this section at Chaosium's request.

David C. Sutherland III created the modern-day wemic for a game product called Monster Cards Set 3, a first edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons supplement released in 1982 ; with the artwork for the original depiction being undertaken by Jim Roslof.

Gygax agreed to develop a set of rules with Arneson and get the game published ; the game eventually became known as " Dungeons & Dragons ".

Settings for the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons are called campaign settings ; other games have also incorporated this term on occasion.

He had a monthly column, entitled " Wil Save ," in the Dungeons & Dragons-based magazine Dungeon ; in May 2005, he ceased writing it.

In some role-playing games, particularly those derived from Dungeons & Dragons, experience points are used to improve characters in discrete experience levels ; in other games, such as GURPS and the World of Darkness games, experience points are spent on specific abilities or attributes chosen by the player.

This was perceived as being aimed at the same Valar book ; early mockups of the cover had the words " Dungeons & Dragons " in the above text printed much larger and in a different font from the rest, right at the top of the front cover.

In creating Akalabeth, Garriott was primarily inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, for which he held weekly sessions in his parents ' house while in High School ; and the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, which he received from an in-law of his brother.

Dungeons & Dragons 2nd and 3rd editions divided true dragons further into three main categories: chromatic dragons, such as green and black dragons, which are evil-aligned ; metallic dragons, such as gold and silver dragons, which are good ; and neutral-aligned gem dragons, rare creatures that possess psionic abilities.

These six appeared along with the gemstone dragons ( crystal dragon, onyx dragon, jade dragon, sapphire dragon, ruby dragon and amber dragon ), and the dragon rulers ( Pearl ( the Moon Dragon ), Ruler of all Chaotic Dragons ; Diamond ( the Star Dragon ), Ruler of all Lawful Dragons ; Opal ( the Sun Dragon ), Ruler of all Neutral Dragons ; and the Great One, Ruler of All Dragonkind ) in the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia ( 1991 ).

Within the context of the Dungeons & Dragons game, one notable subrace of gnoll is the flind, which is shorter, broader, and stronger than other gnolls ; flinds are often found leading a tribe or settlement of gnolls.

The Dungeon Master's Guide ( DMG or DM's Guide ; in earlier editions, the Dungeon Masters Guide or Dungeon Master Guide ) is a book of rules for the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons.

" The Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Second Edition screen came packaged with a brief adventure ; later editions of that screen, and screens produced for later editions, have instead included character sheets and general reference booklets.

At this time, the company also attempted to tap into the growing popularity of role-playing games, with DragonQuest and Universe, responses to Dungeons & Dragons and Traveller respectively ; the term " Adventure Gaming " also replaced " Wargaming " in company advertising.

Wizards of the Coast released an updated version of the original module as a free download for Halloween 2005, retaining much of the original content ; the updated content is from the Dungeons & Dragons supplement book Libris Mortis.

In addition, Livingstone wrote another twelve Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, including The Forest of Doom, City of Thieves and Caverns of the Snow Witch before, in 2012, marking the 30th anniversary of the publication of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain with a new gamebook, Blood of the Zombies ; the title was selected by a vote on the Fighting Fantasy website.

Zombies exist, but are said to be types of vampires caused by an epidemic bloodline that damages the brain and requires the vampire to chew blood from flesh rather than drink it from the vein ; like ' normal ' zombies, they spread their infection through simple biting and can only be killed by destroying the brain.

On Earth-2149 ( a world in which almost all heroes and villains are zombies ) an undead Doctor Octopus first appears in the Marvel Zombies series alongside several other zombie supervillains attempting to kill and devour the invading Galactus ; this incarnation of Doctor Octopus is apparently destroyed piecemeal by several cosmically powered hero zombies after he got in the way of an attack they were aiming at the invading Galactus.

Zombies have been used extensively to send e-mail spam ; as of 2005, an estimated 50 – 80 % of all spam worldwide was sent by zombie computers.

Tracks from the EP and subsequent third album received airplay on Little Steven's Underground Garage Program on Sirius Satellite Radio ; the band was featured at Little Steven's Underground Garage Festival on Randall's Island, New York along with other ' garage rock ' luminaries and legends The Stooges, The Strokes, The New York Dolls, The Zombies and others.

In the novel Sherlock Holmes y los zombis de Camford ( Sherlock Holmes and the Camford Zombies, Ediciones Dolmen, 2010 ; ISBN 978-84-938143-4-2 ) by Spanish author Alberto López Aroca, Steel Claw ( Louis Crandell ) appears under the name " Lewis Crandle ", and his career as an agent of the Shadow Squad ( a branch of the Club Diogenes from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories in this version ) is set back to the beginning of the XX century ( the novel takes place in 1903 ).
