Another influence was early fantasy fiction such as Lord Dunsany's " The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth " ( 1910 ) and A. Merritt's The Ship of Ishtar ( 1924 ).

The setting is strongly influenced by Tanith Lee's Tales from the Flat Earth, Michael Moorcock's Hawkmoon, Lord Dunsany's Gods of Pegana and Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Ninja Scroll.

There were exceptions to this rule however, such as the full-sized elves who appear in Lord Dunsany's The King of Elfland's Daughter as well as Northern English and Scottish Lowlands folklore ( as seen in such tales as The Queen of Elfan's Nourice and other local variants ).

This began an association which lasted for the rest of his life, with his illustrations especially prominent in Dunsany's earlier work ( until c. 1922 ).

The line " Time and the Gods are at strife " inspired the title of Lord Dunsany's Time and the Gods.

Pan entices villagers to listen to his pipes as if in a trance in Lord Dunsany's novel ' The Blessing of Pan ' published in 1927.

Some writers depict the land of the elves as a full-blown parallel universe, with portals the only entry — as in Josepha Sherman's Prince of the Sidhe series or Esther Friesner's Elf Defense — and others have depicted it as the next land over, possibly difficult to reach for magical reasons — Hope Mirrlees's Lud-in-the-Mist, or Lord Dunsany's The King of Elfland's Daughter.

Price sees another inspiration for Azathoth in Lord Dunsany's Mana-Yood-Sushai, from The Gods of Pegana, a creator deity " who made the gods and thereafter rested.

" In Dunsany's conception, MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI sleeps eternally, lulled by the music of a lesser deity who must drum forever, " for if he cease for an instant then MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI will start awake, and there will be worlds nor gods no more.

They first appeared in Lord Dunsany's story in The Book of Wonder: How Nuth Would Have Practised His Art upon the Gnoles and subsequently reappeared in Margaret St. Clair's, The Man Who Sold Rope to the Gnoles and Gary Gygax's Dungeons & Dragons.

Gnolls are the literary descendants of Lord Dunsany's " gnoles ", who were clever, evil and nonhuman.

The descendants of his younger brother, Reginald Drax, bear not only the Dunsany's surname Plunkett, but also other surnames inherited from their mother, Ernle Elizabeth Louisa Maria Grosvenor Ernle-Erle-Drax, née Ernle Elizabeth Louisa Maria Grosvenor Burton ( 1855 – 1916 ), giving them a rare quadruple-barrelled surname of Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax.

This take place in Lord Dunsany's The Charwoman's Shadow, which takes place in Spain, but which ends with the magician in it removing himself, and all creatures of romance, from the world, thereby ending the Golden Age.
