Electrothermal AAS ( ET AAS ) using graphite tube atomizers was pioneered by Boris V. L ’ vov at the Saint Petersburg Polytechnical Institute, Russia, since the late 1950s, and further investigated by Hans Massmann at the Institute of Spectrochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy ( ISAS ) in Dortmund, Germany.

ET was an independent time-variable, proposed ( and its adoption agreed ) in the period 1948 – 52 with the intent of forming a gravitationally uniform time scale as far as was feasible at that time, and depending for its definition on Simon Newcomb's Tables of the Sun ( 1895 ), interpreted in a new way to accommodate certain observed discrepancies.

ET, in turn, can now be seen ( in light of modern results ) as close to the average mean solar time between 1750 and 1890 ( centered on 1820 ), because that was the period during which the observations on which Newcomb's tables were based were performed.

An impression has sometimes arisen that ephemeris time was in use from 1900: this probably arose because ET, though proposed and adopted in the period 1948 – 1952, was defined in detail using formulae that made retrospective use of the epoch date of 1900 January 0 and of Newcomb's Tables of the Sun.

Ephemeris time ( ET ), adopted as standard in 1952, was originally designed as an approach to a uniform time scale, to be freed from the effects of irregularity in the rotation of the earth, " for the convenience of astronomers and other scientists ", for example for use in ephemerides of the Sun ( as observed from the Earth ), the Moon, and the planets.

The atomic clocks gave rise to the atomic time scale, and to what was first called Terrestrial Dynamical Time and is now Terrestrial Time, defined to provide continuity with ET.

The alien character of Prot in the book trilogy by Gene Brewer and played by Kevin Spacey in the movie K-PAX, like Proteus was said to embody, was a modernized " shape shifter " and magical type of advanced mystical ET who " walked in " to humanoid bodies, and shared wisdom and insights into the human condition.

The orbiter was lifted up on a sling very similar to the one used at Kennedy Space Center and placed inside the Dynamic Test Stand building, and there mated to the Vertical Mate Ground Vibration Test tank ( VMGVT-ET ), which in turn was attached to a set of inert Solid Rocket Boosters ( SRB ) to form a complete shuttle launch stack, and marked the first time in the program's history that all Space Shuttle elements, an Orbiter, an External Tank ( ET ), and two SRBs, were mated together.

TT shares the original purpose for which ET was designed, to be free of the irregularities of mean solar time.

It was designed for continuity with ET, and it runs at the rate of the SI second, which was itself derived from a calibration using the second of ET ( see, under Ephemeris time, Redefinition of the second and Implementations.

Because of the historical difference between TAI and ET when TT was introduced, the TAI realization of TT is defined thus:

Prior to the closing of the Vandenberg facility, orbiters were transported from the OPF to the VAB on their undercarriages, only to be raised when the orbiter was being lifted for attachment to the SRB / ET stack.

* Ephemeris Time ( ET ) was from 1952 to 1976 an official time scale standard of the International Astronomical Union ; it was a dynamical time scale based on the orbital motion of the Earth around the Sun, from which the ephemeris second was derived as a defined fraction of the tropical year.

ET, after confirming that Explorer 1 was indeed in orbit, a news conference was held in the Great Hall at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC to announce it to the world.

Such secondary realizations were used and described as ' ET ', with an awareness that the time scales based on the atomic clocks were not identical to that defined by the primary ephemeris time standard, but rather, an improvement over it on account of their closer approximation to uniformity.

A similar time signal from the National Research Council is used by CBC radio services daily at noon ET on Radio-Canada's Première Chaîne, and 1pm ET on CBC Radio One.

After the cesium atomic clock was invented, such clocks were used increasingly from the late 1950s as secondary realizations of ephemeris time ( ET ).

These secondary realizations improved on the original ET standard by the improved uniformity of the atomic clocks, and ( e. g. in the late 1960s ) they were used to provide standard time for planetary ephemeris calculations and in astrodynamics.

Halting work on the original WE. 177, now known as the " A " model, a new version that used the ET. 317 secondary with a modified " Katie B " primary created the WE. 177B.

The original ET is informally known as the Standard Weight Tank ( SWT ) and is fabricated from 2219-a high strength aluminium-copper alloy used for many aerospace applications.
