Morbid Angel was one of the original death metal bands signed to Earache Records, and was also influential in the transition of death metal from its thrash metal roots to its current form by incorporating guttural vocals, up-tempo blast beats, atonality in guitar soloing, and dark, chunky, mid-paced rhythms.
The band released their first album, while signed to Earache Records, the selftitled debut The Haunted, in 1998.
They recorded their 88 Song EP later that year and after its release, a number of record labels started showing interest in the band, including Earache Records, with whom they would later sign a contract.
A few releases later, Earache Records again made an offer to the band, this time to license the 5643 Song EP for a European pressing ( and later to buy the whole pressing ), but Anal Cunt continued to turn down such offers.
