Stevens was so outspoken in his condemnation of the Confederacy that Major General Jubal Early of the Army of Northern Virginia made a point of burning much of his iron business, at modern-day Caledonia State Park, to the ground during the Gettysburg Campaign.

Early claimed that this action was in direct retaliation for Stevens ' perceived support of similar atrocities by the Union Army in the South.

Early conservationists, including such notables as Andrew P. Hill, Father Robert Kenna, John J. Montgomery, Carrie Stevens Walter and Josephine Clifford McCracken, led the movement to create a park to preserve the mighty redwoods.

Early succeeded, where Lee failed twice at Sharpsburg and Gettysburg, and shelled Fort Stevens in Washington, D. C.

It came thanks in part to Confederate General Jubal Early and his threat against Washington, D. C. McCook was placed in command of the " Defenses of the Potomac River and Washington " and was in charge of all forces defending the capital at the Battle of Fort Stevens.

The other two divisions embarked on July 10 and, landing at Washington, attacked Early, whose advance had reached Fort Stevens, within the city limits.
