On the other hand, however, there started rising at the same time cries in defence of Cockney as, for example the following one: " The London dialect is really, especially on the South side of the Thames, a perfectly legitimate and responsible child of the old kentish tongue the dialect of London North of the Thames has been shown to be one of the many varieties of the Midland or Mercian dialect, flavoured by the East Anglian variety of the same speech ".

Chancery Standard was largely based on the London and East Midland dialects, for those areas were the political and demographic centres of gravity.

The LNER also competed with the LMS for traffic between London, the East Midlands, South Yorkshire and Manchester, with the former Midland main line from St Pancras ( LMS ) and Great Central Main Line from Marylebone ( LNER ) both providing express services between these destinations.

The SMJR came into being from the amalgamation of ' The East & West Junction Railway ' ( E + WJR ), ' The Evesham, Redditch and Stratford Railway ' ( ER + SR ), and changing its name to ‘ The Stratford-upon-Avon, Towcester and Midland Junction Railway ’ ( ST + MJR ), ‘ The Easton Neston Mineral and Towcester, Roade and Olney Junction Railway ’ ( ENM + TROJR ).
