The 1990 Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, which is instead concerned principally with what the Second Vatican Council called " particular Churches or rites ", has shortened this phrase to " autonomous Church " ( in Latin, Ecclesia sui iuris ), as in its canon 27: " A group of Christ ’ s faithful hierarchically linked in accordance with law and given express or tacit recognition by the supreme authority of the Church is in this Code called an autonomous Church.

The Church of England has always thought of itself not as a new foundation but rather as a reformed continuation of the ancient " English Church " ( Ecclesia Anglicana ) and a reassertion of that church's rights.

The Ecclesia minor or Minor Reformed Church of Poland, better known today as the Polish Brethren, was born as the result of a controversy that started on January 22, 1556, when Piotr of Goniądz ( Peter Gonesius ), a Polish student spoke out against the doctrine of the Trinity during the general synod of the Reformed ( Calvinist ) churches of Poland held in the village of Secemin.

There was also a chapel, the chapel of St. Laurenti, mentioned in a letter issued on February 5 of 1308 as Ecclesia beati Laurentii de Eikundarsund, where Pope Clement V gives King Håkon V Magnusson extensive privileges concerning the king's 14 chapels ( including the chapel of St. Laurenti ), which was founded by himself or his father, King Magnus Lagabøte, and his grandfather, King Håkon Håkonson.

The church is first mentioned in the papal nuntiers ( sendebuds ) the accounting and diaries that were taken during the collection of tithes for the Nordic countries during the period 1282-1324, when as " Ecclesia Aamsodal.

There used to be a church here, the Church of St. Mary, mentioned in 1292 in a privilege of indulgence issued in Rome on February 5, 1292 by Pope Nicholas IV as Ecclesia beatæ Mariæ de Eikundarsund.

In addition to the forms of liturgical service in the tradition of the Christian church, there is also the devotional service to the Holy Sophia that is unique to the rite of the Ecclesia Gnostica.

Bingham in 1855 wrote: " Ecclesia matrix, a mother-church, is sometimes taken for an original church planted immediately by the Apostles, whence others were derived and propogated afterward.

No archaeological evidence has yet been uncovered to tie either group specifically to the St Helens area, however Eccleston derives its name from either the Latin Ecclesia or Welsh Eglwys suggesting a common link to a church ( though none are known in that township until the 19th century ).

The name " Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica " was not applied to the church until Crowley wrote the Gnostic Mass in 1913, which Reuss proclaimed to be the church's official rite.
