Historical sources relating to the genealogy of the East Anglian kings include the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede's Ecclesiastical History, both compiled many years after the kingdom was formed, as well as lists produced by medieval historians, such as the 12th century Textus Roffensis, who may have had access to other sources that are now lost.

* Edward Gibbon ( 18th century historian ) dismissed his testimony on the number of martyrs and impugned his honesty by referring to a passage in the abbreviated version of the Martyrs of Palestine attached to the Ecclesiastical History, book 8, chapter 2, in which Eusebius introduces his description of the martyrs of the Great Persecution under Diocletian with: " Wherefore we have decided to relate nothing concerning them except the things in which we can vindicate the Divine judgment.

The Interpretations of the Sayings of the Lord ( his word for " sayings " is logia ) in five books, would have been a prime early authority in the exegesis of the sayings of Jesus, some of which are recorded in the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke, however the book has not survived and is known only through fragments quoted in later writers, with approval in Irenaeus's Against Heresies and later by Eusebius in Ecclesiastical History, the earliest surviving history of the early Church.

The Queen-in-Council does not have jurisdiction over doctrinal cases from the Court of Ecclesiastical Causes Reserved, which instead go to an ad hoc Commission of Review, composed of two diocesan Bishops and three Lords of Appeal ( who are also members of the Judicial Committee ).

Ecclesiastical courts in the American Episcopal Church have jurisdiction only over disciplinary cases involving clergy and are divided into two separate systems: one for trials of bishops ( at the level of the national Episcopal Church ) and the other for trials of priests and deacons ( at the level of the diocese for original jurisdiction and at the provincial level for appeals ).

The work owes its preservation to having been incorporated in the third part of the Chronicle of Zuqnin, and may probably have had a place in the second part of the Ecclesiastical History of John of Ephesus, from whom ( as François Nau has shown ) Pseudo-Dionysius copied all or most of the matter contained in his third part.

The letter of Quadratus ( possibly the first Christian apologist ) to emperor Hadrian ( who reigned 117 – 138 ) is likely to have an early date and is reported by Eusebius in his Ecclesiastical History 4. 3. 2 to have stated:

The church canons known as the Ecclesiastical Canons of the Holy Apostles, which appear to have been composed in Syria or Egypt slightly earlier have also been interpreted as imposing a similar obligation.

" The King's majesty hath the chief power in this Realm of England, and other of his Dominions, unto whom the chief Government of all Estates of this Realm, whether they be Ecclesiastical or Civil, in all causes doth appertain, and is not, nor ought to be, subject to any foreign jurisdiction ... We give not to our Princes the ministering either of God's Word, or of the Sacraments ... but that only prerogative, which we see to have been given always to all Godly Princes in holy Scriptures by God himself ; that is, that they should rule all estates and degrees committed to their charge by God, whether they be Ecclesiastical or Temporal, and restrain with the civil sword the stubborn and evildoer ...

Helmut Koester, Professor of Divinity and of Ecclesiastical History at Harvard University, is doubtful that Paul studied under this famous rabbi, arguing that there is a marked contrast in the tolerance that Gamaliel is said to have expressed about Christianity with the " murderous rage " against Christians that Paul is described as having prior to his conversion.

The church is a plain structure, towards the repairs of which the Ecclesiastical Commissioners have recently granted £ 371. 10. 3.

This manuscript may have been the Latin text on which the Alfredian Old English translation of Bede's Ecclesiastical History was based.

Among his literary works -- none of which have as yet been printed ( as of 1912 )-- are worthy of mention: De substantialibus regulae monachalis, preserved in the Durham Cathedral Library ; Contra querelas Fratrum, written about 1390, extant in the British Museum ; and a Latin translation of the Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius, which is also preserved in the British Museum.

Patrick Wormald has claimed that England was a nation by the time of the Venerable Bede, who wrote the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum ( Ecclesiastical History of the English People ) around 730.

He introduced to his denomination the scholarly methods of the new German theology of the day — not alone by his translation with Charles E. Blumenthal of Neander's Life of Christ ( 1847 ), and of Félix Bungener's History of the Council of Trent ( 1855 ), but by his great project, McClintock and Strong's Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature ( 10 vols., 1867 – 1881 ; Supplement, 2 vols., 1885 – 1887 ), in the editing of which he was associated with Dr James Strong ( 1822 – 1894 ), professor of exegetical theology in the Drew Theological Seminary from 1868 to 1893, and the sole editor of the last six volumes of the Cyclopaedia and of the supplement.

The Apostolic Canons or Ecclesiastical Canons of the Same Holy Apostles is a collection of ancient ecclesiastical decrees concerning the government and discipline of the Early Christian Church, first found as last chapter of the eighth book of the Apostolic Constitutions and belonging to genre of the Church Orders.

Eusebius, in his Ecclesiastical History IV, I, stated that Evaristus died in the 12th year of the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan, after holding the office of bishop of the Romans for eight years.

Reverend James William Adams was 40 years old, and a chaplain in the Bengal Ecclesiastical Department ( serving as chaplain to the Kabul Field Force ), British Indian Army during the Second Afghan War when on 11 December 1879 he carried out the actions for which he was awarded the VC.

The source of information about Hilda is The Ecclesiastical History of the English by the Venerable Bede in 731, who was born approximately eight years before her death.

The years from 1776 to 1782 were devoted to the studies of jurisprudence and ecclesiastical history in the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, where he had among other professors the Jesuit scholar, Zaccaria.

Richard Hooker, who speaks of Jewel as the " worthiest divine that Christendom bath bred for some hundreds of years ," was one of the boys whom Jewel prepared in his house for the university ; and his Ecclesiastical Polity owes much to Jewel's training.

By the time the Visigoths under their king Alaric entered Italy and sacked Rome in 410 – the first time a foreign army had set foot in Rome since 390 BC, some 800 years earlier – Rome had ceased to be capital of the Empire either in East or West ( the capital in the East was Nicomedia from 286 to 330, and Constantinople from 330 onward ; in the West it was Milan from 286 to 402, and Ravenna from 402 onward ); indeed, by that point in history, the Bishop of Rome was one of the few senior Ecclesiastical or Imperial officials in the Roman Empire to actually reside in Rome.

Prosecutions ended when a Royal Commission in 1906 recognised the legitimacy of pluralism in worship, but the Act remained in force for 91 years until it was finally repealed on 1 March 1965 through the Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Measures of 1963 ( No. 1 ).

In Emperor Theodosius's edict De fide catholica of 27 February 380, enacted in Thessalonica and published in Constantinople for the whole empire, by which he established Catholic Christianity as the official religion of the empire, he referred to Damasus as a pontifex, while calling Peter an episcopus: "... the profession of that religion which was delivered to the Romans by the divine Apostle Peter, as it has been preserved by faithful tradition and which is now professed by the Pontiff Damasus and by Peter, Bishop of Alexandria ... We authorize the followers of this law to assume the title Catholic Christians ..." Some see in this an implied significant differentiation, but the title pontifex maximus is not used in the text ; pontifex is used instead: "... quamque pontificem damasum sequi claret et petrum alexandriae episcopum ..." ( Theodosian Code XVI. 1. 2 ; and Sozomen, " Ecclesiastical History ", VII, iv.

Some later traditions, first mentioned in the historian Eusebius in his Ecclesiastical History, held that Philip was the first Christian Roman Emperor.
