By 1951, degrees were offered in Arts, Secretarial Science, Music, Home Economics, Library Science, Nursing and Education.

In American law, particularly after Brown v. Board of Education ( 1954 ), the difference between de facto segregation ( segregation that existed because of the voluntary associations and neighborhoods ) and de jure segregation ( segregation that existed because of local laws that mandated the segregation ), became important distinctions for court-mandated remedial purposes.

New qualifications were developed to cope with changing aspirations and economics, with the Leaving Certificate being replaced by the Scottish Certificate of Education Ordinary Grade (' O-Grade ') and Higher Grade (' Higher ') qualifications in 1962, which became the basic entry qualification for university study.

When he was a child, his family moved from Atlanta to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he lived during his adolescence, then moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his father became Dean of Education at Louisiana State University ( LSU ).

Having previously been a local authority institution, the polytechnic became a corporate body on 1 April 1989, as allowed by the terms of the Education Reform Act 1988.

It was planned in 1972 as a single central library but on the mergers of the Didsbury College of Education and Hollings College with the Polytechnic it became a central library and administrative centre for the seven library sites.

Before her marriage, Majer studied physical education at Temple University and later became the first woman to head the Physical Education Department at the University of Pennsylvania.
