Later ( 1710 ) the letter Ф ( with the same etymological rule of spelling and Ф ) was restored and both letters co-existed until the 1918 spelling reform, when Fita was eliminated and replaced by the letter Ef ( Ф ф ).

The name of Ef in the Early Cyrillic alphabet is ( fr ̥ tŭ or frĭtŭ ), in later Church Slavonic and Russian form it became фертъ ( fert ).

In the first variant of the Petrine Russian alphabet ( 1707 – 1708 ), the letter Ф was eliminated and Fita became the only way to represent / f /.

Besides this Greek τ, < span style =" font-family: Constantia, Constantia, serif ;"> φ </ span > can be similar to Cyrillic т, ф in some fonts, Greek δ resembles Cyrillic б in the Serbian alphabet, and the Cyrillic < font face =" serif "> а </ font > also italicizes the same as its Latin counterpart, making it possible to substitute it for alpha or vice versa.

The letter ф is, therefore, almost exclusively found in words of foreign origin, especially Greek ( from ph and sometimes from th ), Latin, French, German, English, and Turkic.

These included the introduction of the letter ё ( yo ) and the gradual loss of ( izhitsa, corresponding to the Greek upsilon and the Latin y ), in favor of и ( both of which represented ); and ( corresponding to the Greek theta ), in favor of ф or т.

The Russian orthography was made simpler by unifying several adjectival and pronominal inflections, replacing the letters ( Yat ) with е, і ( depending on the context of Moscovian pronunciation ) and with и, with ф, and dropping the archaic mute yer, including the ъ ( the " hard sign ") in final position following consonants ( thus eliminating practically the last graphical remnant of the Old Slavonic open-syllable system ).
