In London, in a used bookstore, he came across Gustav Fechner's book Elemente der Psychophysik ( Elements of Psychophysics ), which spurred him to conduct his famous memory experiments.
The appearance of his magnum opus, Handbuch der Physiologie des Menschen, between 1833 and 1840 ( translated into English as “ Elements of Physiology ” by William Baly, and published in London 1837 – 1843 ) marked the beginning of a new period in the study of physiology.
He was a cousin of Jones Quain ( 1796 – 1865 ), the author of Quain's Elements of Anatomy and of Richard Quain ( 1800-1887 ), who was president of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1868, and left to University College, London, funds with which the Quain professorships of botany, English language and literature, law, and physics were endowed.
Although " The Elements " is a pastiche of the Major-General's song, it has itself been parodied, including by the group Amateur Transplants ( of London Underground fame ) as The Drugs Song.
