Elijah then berates both the people of Israel and Ahab for their acquiescence in Baal worship.

Elijah then goes beyond the prophecy he was given and tells Ahab that his entire kingdom will reject his authority ; that Jezebel will be eaten by dogs within Jezreel ; and that his family will be consumed by dogs as well ( if they die in a city ) or by birds ( if they die in the country ).

' The disciples are then told by Jesus that Elijah came in the person of John the Baptist,

Elijah Craig and other Baptists who migrated with him from elsewhere in what was then part of Virginia.

Elijah not only challenges Baal on behalf of his own God, Yahweh, he challenges Jezebel, her priests, Ahab, and the people of Israel.

Jezebel, enraged that Elijah had ordered the deaths of her priests, threatens to kill Elijah ().

This does not conform with the picture given elsewhere in the bible, where sacrifices are offered by a wide range of people ( e. g. Manoah the judge, Samuel and Elijah the prophets, and kings Saul, David and Solomon, none of whom are priests ) and the general impression is that any head of family could make a sacrifice.

The Priests of Baʿal are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible numerous times, including a confrontation with the Prophet Elijah (), the burning of incense symbolic of prayer (), and rituals followed by priests adorned in special vestments () offering sacrifices similar to those given to honor the Hebrew God.

Though there is no documentary evidence to support it, Carmelite tradition suggests that a community of Jewish hermits had lived at the site from the time of Elijah until the Carmelites were founded there ; prefixed to the Carmelite Constitution of 1281 was the claim that from the time when Elijah and Elisha had dwelt devoutly on Mount Carmel, priests and prophets, Jewish and Christian, had lived praiseworthy lives in holy penitence adjacent to the site of the fountain of Elisha, in an uninterrupted succession.

During the early years of the LDS movement, black people were admitted to the church, and there seems to have been no racial policy on denying priesthood, since at least two black men became priests, Elijah Abel and Walker Lewis.

The Book of Ezekiel implies that the rules about animals which die of natural causes, or are " torn by beasts ", were only adhered to by the priests, and were only intended for them ; the implication that they did not apply to, and were not upheld by, ordinary Israelites was noticed by the classical rabbis, who declared " the prophet Elijah shall some day explain this problematic passage ".

In this case the struggle between Yam / Yaw and Baal, prefigures that mentioned between the priests of Baal and the priests of Yahweh, led by Elijah, at Mount Carmel in 1 Kings 18.

This encounter ends with Elijah victorious over the official Baal prophets of Israel in a contest held for the sake of the Israelites and their king, Ahab.

The contest ends when Elijah's God consumes the offering which the Baal worshipers could not induce their god to touch, after which Elijah slaughters the Baal prophets ( 1 Kings 18: 17 – 40 ).

According to the Books of Kings, Elijah defended the worship of Yahweh over that of the Phoenician god Baal ; he raised the dead, brought fire down from the sky, and was taken up in a whirlwind ( either accompanied by a chariot and horses of flame or riding in it ).

At this point Elijah proposes a direct test of the powers of Baal and Yahweh.

Elijah seizes the moment and orders the death of the prophets of Baal.

In the Books of Kings, Elijah challenges 450 prophets of a particular Baal to a contest at the altar on Mount Carmel to determine whose deity was genuinely in control of the Kingdom of Israel ; since the narrative is set during the rule of Ahab and his association with the Phoenicians, biblical scholars suspect that the Baal in question was probably Melqart.

In the Eastern Europe, in spite of the rivalry between the schools of thought of the Vilna Gaon ( or the GRA, Rabbi Elijah ben Solomon, 1720 – 1797 ) of the Mitnagdim, who spoke against Hasidic Judaism and Baal Shem Tov ( Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer, 1700 – 1760 ), the founder of Hasidic Judaism ), rabbis were regarded as the final arbiters of community decisions.

After she had many Jewish prophets killed, Elijah challenged 450 prophets of Baal to a competition ( 1 Kings 18 ), exposed the rival god as powerless, and had the prophets of Baal slaughtered ( 1 Kings 18: 40 ).

God assured Elijah that he wasn't alone, that there were 7000 that had not bowed the knee to Baal.

Much has been added to the simple Bible story by Coelho, including Elijah witnessing the sacking of Akbar by the Assyrians, Elijah's journey up the Fifth Mountain itself ( said to be the dwelling place of Baal ), and Elijah's falling in love with the widow to whom God sent him.

According to some of the adepts of the Jewish Merkabah mystical tradition, if one wished to " descend to the Merkabah " one had to adopt the prayer posture taken by the Prophet Elijah in I Kings 18: 42, namely to pray with one's head between one's knees.

Given the difficulty of identifying the Messianic figure, Jews also pray for the coming of the prophet Elijah to serve as the Messiah's herald and to properly identify him.
