The childless Maximilian and his consort Empress Carlota of Mexico, daughter of Leopold I of Belgium, adopted Agustín's grandsons Agustin and Salvador as his heirs to bolster his claim to the throne of Mexico.

His children included Leopold II of Belgium and Empress Carlota of Mexico.

Leopold II was the brother of Empress Carlota of Mexico and first cousin of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

His father Augustus was a brother of Ferdinand II of Portugal, and also a first cousin to Queen Victoria, her husband Albert, Prince Consort, Empress Carlota of Mexico and her brother Leopold II of Belgium.

He was long suspected of being the illegitimate son of either Empress Carlota of Mexico ( by General Alfred Van der Smissen ); or of her brother Leopold II, King of the Belgians, and Leopold's Polish mistress.

Also a historical resident, Empress Carlota of Mexico ( born the first Belgian princess ) spent many secluded years at the Castle of Bouchout where she died in 1927.

A little south of the royal castle, you can find the neo-gothic Church of Our Lady, initially built as a mausoleum for queen Louise-Marie, wife of Leopold I, whose children included Leopold II of Belgium and Empress Carlota of Mexico.

Some three years later Empress Carlota of Mexico visited Uxmal ; in preparation for her visit local authorities had some statues and architectural elements depicting phallic themes removed from the ancient façades.

As Empress, she took the name of Carlota ( Spanish for Charlotte ).

He became the adopted son, along with his cousin Salvador de Itúrbide y de Marzán, of Mexico's only other royal heads of state — Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and Empress Carlota of Mexico.

Countess Augusta is the grandmother of many notable monarchs of Europe, including both Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom ( through her mother Victoria ) and her husband, Prince Albert ( through his father Ernst ), King Consort of Portugal Ferdinand II ( through his father Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha ), and also Empress Carlota of Mexico and her brother Leopold II of Belgium ( through their father Leopold I who was elected King of the Belgians on 26 June 1831.

It was built from 1856 to 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, later Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota of Mexico, based on a design by Carl Junker.

Since then, it was used as a barracks for Benito Juárez ’ s soldiers, a jail, a residence for the Empress Carlota and the site of the Instituto Literario ( today the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México ).

On his arrival in 1864 with his wife, Empress Carlota of Mexico, daughter of King Léopold I of the Belgians, he found himself in the middle of a political struggle between the Conservatives that backed him and the opposing Liberals, headed by Benito Juárez.

When it was inaugurated, it was named the Paseo de la Emperatriz ( The Empress's Promenade ), after his consort, Empress Carlota of Mexico.

He was a nephew of King Leopold I of Belgium and a first cousin to his children Leopold II of Belgium and Empress Carlota of Mexico, as well as Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her husband Prince Albert.

It was originally known as the Paseo de la Emperatriz after Empress Carlota, the consort of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico who created the avenue for her.

The Order honoured Saint Charles Borromeo, Patron Saint of the Empress Carlota, sovereign of the Order.

Don Agustín de Iturbide y Green, Prince of Iturbide ( 2 April 1863, Mexico City, Mexico – 3 March 1925, Washington, D. C .) was the grandson of Agustín de Iturbide, the first emperor of independent Mexico, and his consort Empress Ana María.

Her aunt, Charlotte of Belgium, the future ill-fated Empress of Mexico, was married to Maximilian, the brother of her future father-in law, the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph.

He often performed solo works in free verse based on the lives of the grand dames of history, including Lucrezia Borgia, Jocasta, Medea, Lola Montez, Nefertiti, Clytemnestra, and Carlotta, Empress of Mexico.
