Microsoft's Encarta, launched in 1993, was a landmark example as it had no printed equivalent.

The most notable competitor of the Britannica among CD / DVD-ROM digital encyclopaedias was Encarta, now discontinued, a modern, multimedia encyclopaedia that incorporated three print encyclopaedias: Funk & Wagnalls, Collier's and the New Merit Scholar.

Like the Britannica, Encarta was available online by subscription, although some content could be accessed for free.

Meanwhile, in the face of competition from rivals such as Encarta, the latest Britannica was digitized by its publishers, and sold first as a CD-ROM and later as an online service.

On 23 March 2005 a version of Encarta was published using the new spelling, and on 14 April an update of Microsoft Office was offered.

Microsoft, Judge Jackson determined that because of IBM's marketing of Lotus SmartSuite, and other alternatives to Microsoft products ( like World Book electronic encyclopedia instead of Microsoft's Encarta ), Microsoft " punished the IBM PC Company with higher prices, a late license for Windows 95, and the withholding of technical and marketing support.

Random House dictionaries are now called Random House Webster's, and Microsoft's Encarta World English Dictionary is now Encarta Webster's Dictionary.
